hi

my original posting was regarding princess cuts. thanks chrono for your help. good thing i just found out she would prefer a cushion or asscher cut.

is there an ideal cut range i should be going by when looking at these cuts? for instance, when i was looking for princess cuts, my research suggested i look within the 65-75 table range and 65-75 depth range.

i actually found a chart that illustrates this, but not for the cushion or asscher cut. it''ll be great if someone can point one out.

thanks.

I'll leave Asschers to Storm...but for cushions, anything can go.

I think that the measurements below are more likely than other combos to net you a great modern cushion. BUT BUT BUT, cushions need to be seen before purchase, no questions. AND just because a cushion doesn't fall within this range doesn't mean it won't be great, and vice versa. I personally wouldn't bother looking myself and would just give Mark at Engagement Rings Direct a call. But that's just me.

Depth: Mid 60's
Table: Mid 50's
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent:
Color: No lower than H unless you like the warmer look.
Clarity: VS2 or SI1 if it's eyeclean. Both will save you cash.

These aren't rules though...just something to help you start your search if you want to DIY. It also depends on what TYPE of cushion we're talking: Antique style, modern cushion brilliant, modified cushion brilliant, square H&A...the list goes on. But really? I would just call Mark. He's fantastic!!!

update on the numbers:

The numbers:
from another thread here is what I look for:
An asscher is one of the hardest diamonds to pick from without someone looking at it in my opinion.
Either a trusted vendor, appraiser or yourself needs to eyeball the diamond.
I look for a table in the 50s very low 60s.
Depth between 60% and 70% Discount 70% and over.
crown 10%+ <--- very important to add fire.
LW ratio as close to 1 as possible.
clipped cornered square vs more octagonal is personal preference Iv seen some awesome ones both ways and like the clipped cornered square look better.
Then it comes down to all eyeballs.
stong and even windmills?
Are the squares well defined and concentric?
Does it have the 10 mile deep look under indirect lighting?

Id say that better than 95% of them will fail the last 3 tests

I also want to add that vg or better on polish and symetry is another thing I look for.
To me it shows that the cutter took better care in cutting it and there is a better chance of the rest being right.
That isnt always the case but its something to think about.

There are a couple pretty lengthy threads on cushions you might find helpful, here.

thanks so much for the quick response and the information!

from what i understand, are asschers a lot harder to find than cushions?

Yes.

GOG has a great rep for finding them, several posters on here got theirs from them. If you decide to go that route, I''d give them a call and let them find you one.

If you want a cushion, give Mark at www.Engagementringsdirect.com a call.

That said, there many "looks" of cushions to pick from. There is the antique cushion, crushed ice cushion, modern cushion, square H&A cushion, and the list goes on. There''s also the ratio to consider, a square cushion or rectangular shape that can affect the faceting look.

I can''t confirm this yet....but an "I" might be okay for a cushion too.
I haven''t seen the diamonds Mark picked out for us, but two of them were I''s and one was an H.
As far as I know, all my BF told him in regards to color is, "Any color as long as it''s not yellow". lol, and it''s not like we *had* to have an "I" in order to reach the 1ct mark....we are ending up having over a grand left over. So, when I get it (which will hopefully be very very very soon!!!) I will give my honest opinion on an "I" color in a cushion.

Asschers will look much smaller for their ct. weight than a Round stone of the same weight. So expect to go up in ct weight just to get a look you are comfortable with.

Cushions can also look smaller. I have found that rectangular cushions do not have that drawback. Now I wanted a rectangular shape before I even looked at cushions. Find out what shape your GF wants. Cause she also likes Asschers you may be looking at a square shape.

As far as color I have an I cushion with MB Fluor. I can see color in certain lighting situations. Like a small room with tan walls. In my family room (tan walls) I don''t see color. Outside I don''t see color. I''m happy with the I. Go to the maul stores and look at GIA certed I colored stones and see what you think. A cushion will show more color than a RB tho so try to find some cushions or asschers.

Yes, this is my experience as well. I don''t find that my cushion faces up smaller at all. Of course I can barely remember it, but I digress LOL
