Asscher help!

Hi Guys,

I'm going to be buying an Asscher this week. After a year of searching, I've narrowed it down to two stones.

Both GIA certs. The first is slightly smaller, but better clarity/color. The second one has (what I think) is a better cut based on the depth/table. It is slightly larger, but slightly worse color/clarity as well as a strong florescence. The price is roughly the same for both diamonds.

I have a 30 day return policy, but I'm hopeful that with your help, I can be more comfortable in my choice.

Thanks!

Specs are not enough to identify a well-cut asscher.
The best tool to evaluate the cut of asschers is an ASET scope.
http://www.ideal-scope.com/1.using_ASET_scope.asp

Look for an acceptable pattern and combination of all 3 colors, even when you rock the stone slightly side to side.

If you can't do this live the next best is a properly-taken ASET pic.

If your vendor will not provide ASET images I'd find another vendor.
Goodoldgold is a great vendor for asschers.
I have bought a few beautifully-cut asschers from them.

Completely agree with Kenny, its impossible to purchased a fancy cut based on numbers alone. If you cant view the stones in person ....and well even if you can I like the added assurance that the confirmatiin of an ASET offers. GOG has a variation of the asscher you may like as well...check out the octavia.

Pass on that one. The center is very dark.

Wouldn't go for other one without pics either.

Thanks Gypsy!

I'm trying my best to get pictures from the other one. I told her i want to buy today (I'm serious too)!

I think they get their stones overseas...

I'll post as soon as I receive them.

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't rush it.

This is a big purchase. And you should take some time.... all you are going to get in a hurry is a bad diamond.

Seriously. You can buy THIS WEEK. But today? No. I'd wait.

The majority of asschers out there are dogs. It takes a little time and patience to find a nice one. Trust me.

Here is a pic of the second diamond. I've asked for ASET pics or even a video of the diamond. I don't know if Adiamor has access to the diamonds or not, but honestly, it is very difficult to make such a big purchase without seeing the diamond.

I can't tell anything from that.

It's a terrible picture. But the center looks like it is going to ASET blue and that large step in the middle probably will too. So... if that bears out with the ASET, I would pass.

Did you see the JA stone I posted for you? It has a lot of potential.

I did see that stone - and you're right - it's beautiful!

Just for clarification - am I looking to avoid the black concentric outline in the middle of the stone when it directly faces the viewer? Without an ASET picture, is this really the way to measure it with your eye? Intuitively, I would guess that it should sparkle from all angles (like yours). Looks like I may have to sacrifice a bit on the cttw to get within my budget.

Here's another one from James Allen that I think shows the difference...

On a side note - Adiamor said they will get ASET and (hopefully) video of that stone tomorrow.

Also, also... you're right again. My "rush" to get this is really self imposed. I do want to get the ring right away, but realistically, I have a few months.

Cant thank you all enough for the help!

Just wanted to give you all an update on my saga.

Adiamor was not able to give me better pics/video or ASET. I guess my best option would be to buy and return if I didn't like it. Not a great option in my book.

I went to James Allen as suggested and got them to send me three ASET pics of diamonds that were in my range. I must say - their customer service is pretty spectacular thus far.

I wanted to attach the ASET pics from the diamond that was recommended by gypsey:

The gemologist looked at it and said it shows as a true H, a great amount of brilliance with the alternating light and dark steps, but has a small crystal under the table that depending on how sensitive the eye that is looking at the diamond is, they may be able to pick up on it.

The second diamond is 1.7 H VVS2. Its about a grand more, but the gemologist said this was the better of the two describing it as having a very good amount of brilliance (white light return), with the alternating steps of light and dark. It is a very well performing asscher cut diamond, with a great amount of fire (dispersion of color) and sparkle that is well balanced and symmetrical. IT is a true "H" in color, which means that it faces up a nice white color and is completely "eye clean".

It's about a grand more for the same cttw - what do you guys think?

Neither ASET has me jumping for joy.

The crystal under the table of the one gives me pause. And the Gemologist is the one you can compare them side by side. So I would likely go with the gemologists recommendation of the two listed.

I do not think either one has an ASET good enough to buy. You need more red and blue than those have.

I had Good Old Gold call in some asschers for me, and they did the ASET images and took this video. I am linking it to show you that there are good asschers and there are great asschers. Why not get a great one if you can?

(I bought the second one, FYI)

^^^^ DS is right. Call GOG.

I've checked GOG's website. I don't see much of a selection and nothing in the carat range that I am interested in.

What specifically doesnt have you jumping for joy (out of curiosity)? I see lots of red and green?

They don't carry many asschers in stock. They brought 3 of those 4 asschers in the video in for me to look at. They brought in stones specifically within the budget and spec range I wanted. They have a couple of excellent asscher cutters. You call them and tell them what you are looking for, and then they see what is available.

A good ASET will have more red and blue than anything else. For example, here is mine. Blue is contrast so the reds and blue facets reflect light well as the stone is moved around. Green is neutral. There are better ASETs even than mine, but mine is an excellent performing stone. You can see that if you looked at the video. It was just the prettiest of the first three stones (and the fourth would not fit my setting).
