I am currently looking for an Asscher shape diamond and would like to know the pricescope experts opinions on this diamond i chose from bluenile below. I would also like to know a guideline i could follow with the table & depth percentage ( what #'s i should stick between ) and along with the polish, symmetry and fluorescence. I am currently in the NYC/NJ area so if anyone knows some good vendors i could swing by to see the diamonds in person, that would be great. thanks! :wavey:

Unfortunately, step cuts (asschers included) cannot be purchased by the numbers alone. There are too many angles not listed on the lab memo to take into consideration. At the very least, a true picture of the diamond is needed. As ASET is even better. You can discount this one right away with the large 70% table. Having a smaller table still doesn't guarantee that it will be a nice looking stone either. I would give Good Old Gold a shout out in NY.

For asschers' I usually defer to Gypsy, KarlK or Richard Sherwood. However with that said, Richard has written previously what to look for here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/what-is-the-ideal-asscher-cut.19989/

With all that said I personally wouldn't buy this due to the table %.

Is the crown height mentioned somewhere I dont' see it. Plus for an asscher I would want to see an ASET as well to see light performance.

Sorry Chrono we were posting at the same time. :)

I agree with GOG, I would also look into James Allen though I'm not sure where they are located. I think between those 2 places you will find a wonderful asscher. I hope Gypsy sees this because she always gets the needle in the haystack great asschers. Or DS for that matter. She had a beautiful asscher from GOG.

Without ASET images of the stones its very difficult to determine how they will perform. Unfortunately I'm on my kindle at the moment and cant see the stones you've linked, but like mentioned above there are several asscher experts that can better advise you. I would just caution you from attempting to limit yourself to a small sample of table and depth proportions. It impossible to judge fancy (any shape) shapes by these numbers alone and you will unwittingly dismiss stones with fantastic potential.

I second or third the GOG referral. Jon has selected some gorgeous asschers for PSers in the past and in my opinion there is no substitute for seeing this cut with your own eyes.

Opps! I can't go back and edit my post. I mentioned that you shouldn't limit yourself to specific table and depth percentages, but I do agree with Chrono that the first stone you linked has a table that it too large....so I guess I'm retracting my advice somewhat. There are some preferred proportions that can help you narrow down your selection, but I still believe that you shouldn't limit yourself to these proportions specifically, but rather use them as a guide, because we have seen some really beautiful stones that fall outside of these combinations. https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/asscher-cut-diamond

Of the three JA stones you linked I prefer the 1.42 H. It has a beautiful crown and looks like it would be a great performer. If I were buying I would put that one on hold.
The 1.54 would be my second choice but honestly I can't see spending another $3.5k if the 1.42 pans out.
ASETs are important and JA will provide you with three so you need to pick two more diamonds that you would like compared.

Here is another one I like.http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.50-carat-f-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-196572
It has a nice high crown, dramatic clipped corners and a small table.
You haven't clarified your budget so if this one is out of the range disregard it but do look at it to understand what I mean about high crown and small table. I found this one under the emerald cut link, all "asschers" are gia certed as Square Emerald cut so on JA you can find some in the EC section.
I really love the 1.50 I found!!! Open multiple screens and look at them all at once. You'll be able to see the difference.

Another I like if its eyeclean, it's not perfectly square though. http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.50-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-30379

I am not an expert nor did I pick these based on technical data. I chose them based on what is pleasing to me. I love stepcuts and spend hours looking at the diamonds on JA. I'm not going the explain in depth why I like the ones I am asking you to look at. I just know that if I were shopping for myself I would definately consider these. If you like any of them put them on hold, get an ASET on each, post them here and allow the experts to make a recommendation. Best of luck!

I have a slight preference for the 1.54 over the 1.42 but both could be nice. Not quite a full pillowy top asscher though. The 1.21 looks "gappy". Woofmama's recommendations are good too if within budget and if the E VS2 is eye clean.

Re: ASSCHER DIAMOND INFO NEEDED! ASSCHER EXPERTS PLEASE HELP

All I can tell you is that it is not safe to buy an asscher from a picture alone. As has already been mentioned, I bought mine from Good Old Gold. They had a couple and called in a couple with my specs, did the light performance testing, and shot a video for me of the diamonds which made it very easy for me to choose. The video will show you why a picture is not enough. All 4 of the choices for me were good asschers, but one stood out among the rest. I am very glad I didn't buy blind or I could have easily chose the wrong one.

I do agree that having Jon at GOG find you an asscher is another great option. Watch the video DS linked. He is known for choosing outstanding diamonds! I would happily work with him to choose a stepcut stone.

Re: ASSCHER DIAMOND INFO NEEDED! ASSCHER EXPERTS PLEASE HELP

thanks again for all the ppl who chimed in. i forgot to mention that my budget is capped at 10K including the diamond and setting. sorry about including the JA diamonds that were over 10K. I would like to work with GOG but i am reading he is on the more expensive side and would my budget work with him? For the diamond specs, i would like to stay in the 1.2-1.5 carat range, G-H color and VVS2-VS2 clarity. is it better to stick with a higher clarity grade because it is easier to see inclusions? thanks for that vid DS! which one of the 4 diamonds in the vid did u choose?

Re: ASSCHER DIAMOND INFO NEEDED! ASSCHER EXPERTS PLEASE HELP

I chose the second diamond, the H VVS. There is no way I could have judged it as being better than the others had I not had the video. I think the last J color stone was really great, too, but it was a little too large for my setting.

Yes, of course your budget will work for a 1.2+ ct stone at GOG! Mine was somewhere in the $6k range at 1 ct. so I am sure your budget of $10k will get you a larger size! I would aim as close to VS1 as possible as those are generally totally clean. You pay a little more for VVS which isn't necessary. But in my case, it happened to be the best stone so it was worth it to me. There can be eyeclean VS2 stones as well, but you have to be more careful with those. GOG will tell you, though.

Re: ASSCHER DIAMOND INFO NEEDED! ASSCHER EXPERTS PLEASE HELP

that was my guess DS! that is an absolutely beautiful stone and in the spot lighting it is on FIRE
do you have any pics of that beauty in action?

Re: ASSCHER DIAMOND INFO NEEDED! ASSCHER EXPERTS PLEASE HELP

I agree with DS, it's really important to get a good look at this particular cut under many different lighting environments and to work with a vendor that can really guide you and knows what to look for in a well performing stone. I love JA's videos but all of the their photos are from the same angle so it's difficult to get a feel for how the stone will perform in a RL situation. I prefer the 1.54 from your selections but again it's just so difficult to say without additional information. I've always felt that this is a cut that you really need to see in person as they have a life and personality that is difficult to capture from photos and video. Working with a vendor that can be your 'eyes' will be very beneficial.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I also worked with GOG for my asscher and it was a great experience. Jonathan will definitely be able to work within your budget. We gave him our budget which was about the same as yours and he found 4 stones for us within a day or two. All of them were within budget and the one we ended up choosing was WAY under (can't remember exact price now, but in the $6k range I think). We were never pressured to up the budget, we gave him our preferred stats and he brought us exactly what we wanted.
