I went ahead and bought an Asscher Stone 1.21 ct, H color, VS2. I got a substantial discount because it's a VS2 and just outside of ideal cut, but I am having buyers remorse somewhat in hoping that it will be eye clean. I got it from Blue Nile so I have I did not get a chance to see it.

Is there a chance that a VS2 Asscher won't be eye clean? Most of the inclusions are on the perimeter with a slight cloud in the near middle, according to the GIA paper work.

A VS2 is very likely to be eye clean. My concern is that you purchased blind because there is no clue as to the cut quality. Blue Nile does not provide any pictures, videos or ASET imaging to be able to gauge the cut quality. There is no official or standard ideal cut grading for step cuts and they cannot be purchased by the numbers.

How would you then gauge cut quality, just by what looks good to the eye?

I heard getting a depth under between 65 - 68 is ideal and I am at 68.3

Proof that shopping by the supposedly ideal numbers can still net you dogs. This is why you NEED to see pictures of the actual diamond, a video and back that up with an ASET image.

How exactly do I know if it is a good cut with these stones? Is the ASET the key?... if so what triggers tell me it's good?

If you like, you can share your requirements and we can point you to both vendors and stone that are likely to be good performers.

Looking for an Asscher cut. VS2 or better, H color or better and I would like to stay under 5,500. I would like it to be as big over a carat as possible because I hear that Asschers do not face up as big as other stones. But, I'm sure a better cut would allow me to size down and have it show as a bigger stone. This is why I bought the 1.21 ct originally.

You have to request it. I've seen enough to be able to gauge which ones will ASET out well and which ones won't.

Thanks for the help.

If I bought Blue Nile Sig Ideal then would that ensure a good cut without seeing images?

I do not recommend ever buying a diamond without images of the stone and preferably light return images. BN is just not the place to buy a fancy cut diamond. Their signature rounds would be the only exception I might make. I would cancel that order, because there might be like 1 out of ten that would be considered really great.

Good Old Gold called in diamonds for me and I had the choice of three nice stones. He included a fourth in the video that was larger than I needed. You just probably aren't going to luck into buying a stone this well cut buying blind.
