was browsing through Fay Cullen last night and saw this stunner. If I only had $21k ($18 for the ring, $3k for Leon to reset it!!)

I''ve never seen an asscher cut ruby before.

closeup of the stone, and details for postarity''s sake. Odd that they didn''t call the ruby an asscher, as I see windmills!! Also, they call the sidestones both princess and square emerald.

This Burma ruby engagement ring with princess-cut [sic] diamonds from an estate is crafted in platinum and 18k rose gold, weighs 8.8g and measures 8.5mm wide and 7.5mm deep. In impressive, timelessly elegant linear style, this alluring three-stone engagement ring exposes a significant 2.74ct square emerald-cut Burma ruby, measuring 7.58mm long and 7.46mm wide, graded a most highly prized ''pigeon blood'' color and ''good'' clarity. Secured by quatrefoil prongs within a diaphanous rose gold frame, the attention-seeking vivacious corundum is flanked by a duo of prong-set, princess-cut diamonds, cumulatively weighing 1.44cts, graded E color and VS1 clarity. This enchanting accoutrement of high quality ruby and diamonds surmounts a diaphanous, bi-tone gallery, embraced by subtly shielded, tri-dimensional, tapering shoulders. This captivating Burma ruby and diamond three-stone engagement ring features a svelte, tapering platinum band and an easily sizable shank.

finally, my absolute favorite part of Fay Cullen: Hand Shot! The color on this ruby makes my mouth water....

Pretty and yummy. I love there web site and they have so much stuff but I have yet to purchase from them. I also love the handshots and it really leaves out the guessing of how it will look on your hand!

Hi Cagey!

The ruby is NOT an Asscher. It is cut in a square emerald, and the side stones are also NOT princess cuts. An asscher cut is best viewed in very light stones, mainyl diamonds. The point of it is to SEE through the stone, so in cloudier gemstones, although the outline is of an asscher, they are likely just square cuts, french cuts, or square emeralds. An Asscher cut would be a waste.

The difference is that Asscher cut is a specific cut (once branded) by the Asscher Brothers. It includes the corners to be cut to half the side of the sides, and the actualy pattern seen within will exhibit distinct patterning called "windmilling". The pavillion also has a very distinct stpe cut that allows for the windmilling effect. The crown will be quite high and have 3 steps or two if an older cut. IMHO if it was not cut to the same proportions of the original, then it is just a square cut emerald. A very large majority on the market are square emeralds being called Asscher. The sidestones are closer to an asscher, but are square cut emeralds as well NOT princess cuts. I have no idea why they call them that if they do not show a chevron pavillion pattern, a low crown, or have a brilliant pattern on the crown with no clipped corners. THAT is a princess cut...?

From their website:

"The Asscher-cut, a unique method of cutting rectangular diamonds developed by the Asscher brothers in 1902, is a distinctive variant on the Emerald-cut. The exceptional proportions on the top of the diamond and a special arrangement of facets create a stone with enormous warmth and elegance. Since its development this distinctive Emerald-cut variant has often been copied.

This flawless Asscher-cut diamond in a Van Cleef & Arpels ring, weighing 16.27 carats and with a D colour, was auctioned at Sotheby''s on 16 November 1995. It fetched US $ 1,067,000.

We have discontinued the production of the old Asscher Cuts as we think too many different shapes are in the market under that name."

ah, you got me, Nicrez! I probably should have said "Asscher-like". I also say Coke for sodas and Xerox for copies, but you''re right

On my initial reading of the description, I thought they called the ruby a princess rather than a square emerald, but upon rereading, they just messed up the desciption of the side stones.

regardless, still yummy, right?

I still say "Coke, Pepsi, whatever" when people ask for a softdrink. So many ways to say it!

I also say Band-Aids and Q-Tips...bad me!

They are not very accurate at all. If it is certified as "Burmese Pidgeon Blood" they need a new cert! This is what Pidgeon Blood should look like. That''s something of a pinker stone. Actually, I prefer a pinker stone like this one you posted, it is a nice hue to me...

I just hate when people are misleading or innaccurate. I think you should stand behind your word and your description, or beware of your reputation and character being repudiated. I get nervous when people include descriptions with extraneous words and overly flowery style. I know they are trying to make a sale, but sometimes if you give less but only facts, your reputation remains intact, in case something like "pidgeon blood" or "princess cut" are totally wrong... grrrr....

ooho! that is a lovely one that you posted! It almost looks like velvet.....I love that quality of rubies and emeralds!

I''ve always wondered who exactly writes the descriptions for Fay Cullen - I think they hurt themselves trying to over elaborate their items. Kind of like the over the top wedding writeups in the Sunday Papers! (my favorite one of these of all times was describing a reception in a summer house in the Hamptons, where the writer said "the rooms were as airy as oxygen tanks" which connotates O2 cannisters rather than a volumous room!)

That company has gorgeous stuff-I''ve seen their site before. I am a little skeptical of the hand shot though-something doesn''t look right about it
I am thinking of this burma ruby & diamond ring. -What do you think of it?

dasnoop8, i like that setting, but the craftsmanship on it is not so nice. It looks like too much metal and the finish looks modern and sloppy. The beading is too big, but the setting design is very pretty and the ruby is so sweet too!

Shame...

It''s so hard to find nice settings, and even the beautiful stones i find are set in atrocites sometimes!

Funny...people''s tastes are so different! That''s the part I like the most. The center color is the best against the skin, as it''s a shallower stone and i LOVE very flat shallow rings!

I have a personal favorite which is a sapphire with a very very shallow depth that windows in the center, as the exposed culet touches the skin. It''s not painful, as it''s not very pointed at all, but it''s an octogonal cut that just windows in a soft blue. I adore it for that reason!

Which is why everything has a buyer...

A true beauty!rubies are a favorite of mine.

Wow, that almost looks like a pink sapphire to me. I wouldn''t describe the color as ''pidgeon blood'' but then again I have never seen a pidgeon''s blood.
