My fiancee and I love Asscher fancy shape diamonds and are trying to find the best cut one within our price range. We want to use the Atlas DIY
program at http://www.gemappraisers.com/ to compare stones. Since they are listed on GIA certs as square emerald cut, is the emerald cut dimensions specific to the various grades w/in this program appropriate for this shape?
thanks for the replies

Asschers are a special class of square step cuts, and so are square emerald cuts. However, the two are not the same. 'Asscher' narrowly refers to either a historic cut or a modern branded cut by the same producers. However, square emerald cuts are called 'asscher cuts' in a liberal way. This is the case of your stone, so the standards for emerald cuts apply.

No, the ASA cut chart does not apply to Square Emerald "Asscher Cut" diamonds... The reason is because an Asscher cut is produced to exhibit concentric squares down the center of the table facet which requires a deeper total depth than a standard emerald cut diamond - usually something in the 67 - 72% range. We considered the branded Asscher for our inventory, but didn't like the addition of the extra facets in the more recent design by Royal Asscher, the stone looked disturbingly 'busy' to us... We prefer the more traditional square emerald cut version of the Asscher Cut. By the way, they are readily available with Excellent Polish & Symmetry so there is no need to settle for anything less

Robin and Todd, we completely agree that the Royal Asscher is "disturbingly busy", and while they're certainly impressive, that wasn't the look that we were going for. Thanks for the specific advice concerning total depth and concentric squares. And you're also right that there are some beauties out there in this square emarald cut.
Many Thanks.
