Hello,

I think I found the diamond I want to buy. It is in my price range and has the following specs

1.17
Triple Excellent GIA
3.4 HCA
J color
Strong Blue Fluro
SI1 Clarity

$3.6K

Here are the pictures. Do these look good?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi,

No, pictures don't look good.
Likely cut a bit too deep.
The thing is, Ideal cut 1ct + J SI1 run in the neighbourhood of $6,000+
So if this works for your budget you may want to get it and see it in person.
You may still like it.
What's the return policy?

Is there any flexibility in terms of your 4Cs (other than cut)?
Most likely you'll need to go down in size to around .9 if you want a well cut diamond w/ minimal light leakage.
There is a big price jump at 1ct mark.

I mean, that's a pretty good price, but no, they don't look great.

If you are working with a PS vendor, ask for more photos. Ask for their opinion on it. Maybe the VS fluor has negative effects?

Interesting, is it that bad?

It is Triple Excellent, you would think GIA would know if it looked good?

I am asking so I can learn, not trying to make it sound like those helping me are wrong.

GIA's "excellent" category is too broad - some stones sneak in on the line that really shouldn't have been. What do you call the guy who graduates last in the class from medical school? Doctor. Same thing - this one is in the bottom of the class of excellents.

+1

But you may still find it beautiful.
And so does people around you who look at your diamond.

Let's face it. How many people, relatively speaking, who are not passionate about diamonds and/or work in the industry really know about diamonds, how they are cut etc.
But they understand carat/how big they look...
And perhaps how sparkly it is, to an extent...
As long as it doesn't look like frozen spit, which this one definitely does not.

In theory, this will look dark around the table.
But you may want to see first how much it bothers you.
Unless:
A. You want to get more sparkly but smaller diamond
B. Fork out ~60+% more than your original budget to get sparkly diamond with comparable size

Your call.

Thanks for your help. I think I may get it, check it out and return it if I do not like it.

It seems like a great price, and to your point, while it may not be an exceptional, ideal diamond, it may still be very nice to a layman.

I have a question for you all.
If I had bought from a local jeweler, would most of their stones all be better than this cut wise?

No...it would all depend on the jeweler. We have had lots of people come on PS asking about stones that their local jeweler
found for them. Some have been well cut, some have been ok and some have been plain bad.

I'm assuming you are not referring to local jeweler who are also trusted PS vendors who sell ideal cut diamonds here.
So... it's quite hit and miss.
One thing that is most likely true if you are talking about regular local jeweler/mall jeweler is that for the same specs (cut etc.) their stones are most likely priced higher than if you buy online (possibly due to larger overhead & inventory cost).
