Article - "Why Diamonds Are A Waste of Money"....

I do think it's a lot of money to have sitting on a finger (literally!).
I agree Laila, there are times (not many!) when I look at my hand and think this dainty little thing cost thousands. But mostly I just enjoy it and don't think about what I paid for it, or what it's worth. Then again I like the enduring quality of jewelery. I inherited some pieces from my mother. I used the stones and changed some of it to my taste and I hope to pass on to my daughters my jewelery. What they do with it is their business, they already take an interest in it so I think it will mean something to them.

It's the title of the article that reels you in and grabs your attention.

This is Marketing 101.

If I see an article titled "7 reasons why you must read this article" I usually read it.

So, the author does a good job of getting your attention---whether you agree with the content or not is less important.

Now you know who the author is and this is just promotion of his website. And it creates "buzz."

What I find really striking about the article isn't the article, which is regurgitated nonsense being spat about to get attention.

It's the comments, which, to take the bodily excreta metaphor a step further, are full of bile.

Articles like these always seem to bring the misogynist trolls out from under the bridges - dude who wants to get his "next" wife a set of implants because then, unlike the first one, she won't be able to take them off like she did the ring and put him behind her? NICE.

There's this implication that women, as a gender, are in collusion with the industry - diamond-digging instead of gold-digging, if you will - and that men are their collective victims. Every time, it makes me feel a little sad for those poor dudes, who have such low self esteem that they have to keep casting about for people to blame for their own inadequacies.

Then I roll my eyes, and move on, because I have better things to think about. Would that they did ....

He is right when he says that diamonds are not a good investment, because they are susceptible to be in such an economical crisis that imply the fall of their prices. It is not the same case with silver or gold -but specially silver-, because it is very improbable that we stop needing them, in case of economical crisis, or in case of war or revolution, there will always be demand for such an useful material, specially with the increase of technology usage. Every electronic machine use silver. And, in a war, people would give a damn for diamonds, their potential usage as hardest rocks, is not enough to justify that expensive price. So, your diamond would be the same price as a rock.

Pretty much.

If someone's really interested in the rise of diamonds and the history of it, why not google it and see if you come up with something a little more objective so you can make your own decisions? I did that because I do find the history of diamonds and their use in engagement rings interesting and came up with this just for starters:

http://www.rd.com/advice/relationships/the-history-of-engagement-rings/

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/04/the-strange-and-formerly-sexist-economics-of-engagement-rings/255434/

Well, I don't think many men mind buying diamonds to get engaged, and hell - that's how it's been for a while. There are some women that don't need that, but what good woman doesn't deserve nice things and to be pampered?

Plus, women like to buy jewels themselves... so I don't think ANYONE will be willing to waste money if diamonds were such.

Personally, I feel most of the info this guy gives isn't that great anyway... I don't care if he gets money from JA for his recommendations. I've seen the stones he recommends and about half of them look like sh!t stones. Meh. The article does little to move me.

He may be right, but I'm still in the market. Maybe enough people will be stymied and the demand will diminish, which means a bigger/better rock for all price ranges! :appl: I won't hold my breath on that though.
