Uh-oh, they said don't buy jewelry new. Ditto for formalwear. My cats are from the animal shelter, though.

very good point!!! lol

Hmm... some of these I don''t like.

Used DVD''s come with scratches

Used books come with smells - although I do buy used.. .some things I just want new!

Used special occasion clothes - ummm... seasons?

Used pets?? I do understand the adoption idea though, and have adopted.

Used home accents - yes and no... depends on what you want. I love antiques

On the house note... what if there are specifics I want.

cars - I want a new car so badly

sports equipment - again depends on what you are after. I have a used treadmill... but I won''t buy a used jump rope, weights, or anything that requires consistent hand contact... the sweat
32.gif

consumer electronics - become dated, don''t always work well..

how about we make our own list? 20 things... GO

some ikea furniture dont make it past the first owner. my friend''s dresser from college fell apart as we started moving it down 4 flights of stairs. we tossed it off the balcony because it was easier to toss the pieces into the trash bin, rather than moving it all the way down.

Consumer electronics is one thing i never buy used. i dont know if that camera has been dropped, or if the laptop has been dropped... etc...

Cars. Mechanics can do wonders. carfax wont have full info if nothing was reported!

I agree with everything on that list.

Okay, right....

I was ok with the list until I saw

#20 Timeshare

Never buy timeshare, new used or gifted. Run away at all times.

and then

#21 Recreational Items

Hmm... am I the only one thinking about items that need batteries and come in nice feminine colours that *ahem* are good for back ache. I''m not buying that used; no sir.

May I add clothes and aquariums?
Zillions of people get an aquarium and find out it requires study, learning and work, so it ends up in the garage.

I disagree on cars.
There are two kinds of cars for sale in the world . . . new . . . and cars that someone wants to get rid of.

I cant think of a single that I would prefer used to new.

The only things I can think of that I would buy used are lawnmowers and patio furniture.

But if we don't buy video games new, how can DH advance order them and play them right on the release date?
3.gif
And they're not really much cheaper unless you wait a while after release and are usually scratched (in my experience)

I thought some of the items on the list were a bit strange. Not sure where I would buy used formal-wear? Consignment shop I guess? Though I don't want an item that is already a few years out of style.

I'm also not keen on buying used electronics since so many things only work for 4-5 years max I'd rather get the full life out of them.

17. Sports Equipment

Um... eeeew!
23.gif
I am sorry, but I really do believe that about 90% of my sports equipment (Ice Hockey) would be absolutely NASTY to buy used.
I think this list is way too broad, it would be almost impossible for someone to by EVERYTHING on that list used (for the same reason that radiantquest pointed out above).

For me: Things to never buy new

clothing hangers - you can go to Penny''s, or Sear''s or Kohl''s and just ask for clothes hangers and they''ll give you as many as you want!
Grills - I know this is a good business for people... but I''d much rather a) make my own or b) get one handed down/used. The flavors from a well used grill are second to none.
Pets - I agree in terms of adopting. It is so fulfilling knowing you are giving an animal a loving home. This is especially so when they might not otherwise have one.
boxes - Why on earth people buy boxes is beyond me. Again...go to a store and ask for some.
STARTER home - if you don''t plan on being there permanently... why on earth buy new?

Things I would NEVER get used
Any type of anything used in hair
cosmetics
shoes - sorry I can''t hack this one
horse brushes - germs
horse bits

I am fine with used jewelry, clothes (not under wear) and I have never had a new car.
But there is no way I could carry a used handbag or wallet.
Maybe because ladies carry their most personal stuff in there. I don''t know.

I was in agreement until I realised there was a 2003 Limited Ed LV that I had to have. LV could not track one down so I had to buy ''pre-loved'' and have no regrets.

I think buying used jewelry is fine. Lots of gorgeous vintage items and you can get good deals.

I used to buy stuff used, including cars, but I got tired of it. Now I take the other side - meaning, when I buy something I figure if I can resell it to someone else in the future. Often this is a very good way to save money and get rid of used stuff. So, this Yahoo article is helping the cause!

unless i hit the lotto

don''t think i''ll buy a new car again.

i wouldn''t wear other people''s used jewelry (COOTIES

) w/o a new setting.

I couldn''t agree more on aquariums...we have two giant ones sitting in our basement, one a rectangular thing and the other is one of the "oh so neato" octagon monsters that I had visions of being such a great centerpiece in our family room...

Yuck, dealing with fishtanks is NOT for me! Now they just sit in the cellar, I think I would actually pay someone to take them. I am way too lazy to drag them back upstairs and actually put them at the end of the driveway or deal with having to have someone from craigslist come look at them.

I crack up every time I see people actually asking money for them on craigslist.

New cars, however, are the biggest waste of money going. I bought my car new and the minute I drove it off the lot I lost about 5k.

People drive a car for 6 months and realize it isn''t a good fit - trade it in, you buy it used and save a boat load of money. Used cars are a very very wise choice, any financial guru will tell you that.

Huh?

Do you eat in restaurants? I''m sure the silverware has been used plenty before you stuck it in your mouth...how could wearing a piece of jewelry that YOU clean be at all gross?

Starter home - our home was 30 years old when we purchased it. Non stop maintenance, that's why. What I wouldn't give for new floors, new walls, a basement that didn't have 30 years of dirt/dust, a furnace that was brand new, pipes that were brand new, a layout that I chose myself, new windows - you name it. There are PLENTY of reasons to buy a new home!

Hair stuff, Cosmetics, Shoes - right with you there, just can't do it.

1. DVDs and CDs - Or just download through iTunes - would that be considered new? Or used?
2. Books - Half-Priced Books is one of my recent discoveries (where have I been?) The only downside - used cookbooks - and the messes people make of them.
3. Video Games - No can do, but I wish he would. DH buys every game on their release date and has the game beaten within 2 weeks.
4. Special Occasion and Holiday Clothing - I could see some instances, like wedding gowns, where this could work, but otherwise, I can't subscribe to that newsletter.
5. Jewelry - I've had amazing luck with secondhand jewelry and gemstones.
6. Ikea Furniture - Meh, I have two Ikea dressers that have made it through 3 moves. They don't look too terrible either, so this could be doable, but if they're referring to furniture in general - solid wood pieces tend to last forever.
7. Games and Toys - Kid 2 Kid is the best thing ever!
8. Maternity and Baby Clothes - Again, Kid 2 Kid - a godsend!
9. Musical Instruments - Pianos? Sure. Flutes? No way.
10. Pets - Both of my cats are used - an ASPCA rescue kittie and a stray who adopted Me.
11. Home Accent - Sure, I can maybe see this as feasible. As long as we're not talking about bed linens.
12. Craft Supplies - I'm not even sure where they're going with this. Old brushes? Used canvas? Help me out here.
13. Houses - Totally depends on where you live. Old houses in TX = termites, foundation problems, inadequate insulation. Problems, expensive ones, I dealt with and will hopefully never deal with again.
14. Office Furniture - Have you seen how much damage my DH can do to a desk in 3 years? And he's supposedly careful.
15. Cars - Yup. The one exception I'll make to that is a car that tends toward modification. I'll take my STI fresh off the truck from Subaru please. Better the immediate value hit than a shattered transmission and untold repairs due to past abuse.
16. Hand Tools - Sure, DH's Dad has given him a few great hand-me-downs.
17. Sports Equipment - I'm a rock climber. No way, no HOW could you get me in a used harness again!
18. Consumer Electronics - If you're not one that cares for leading edge technology, CL has some amazing deals.
19. Gardening Supplies - Yup, our neighbours have donated a grill to us, so we donated a lawn mower to another neighbour. If it works, it doesn't matter if it's new or used.
20. Timeshares - Have to agree. If ever.
21. Recreational Items - If we're talking boats, RVs, ATVs - YES! New boats seriously drop like a rock.

We got our cats at the bargain bin - one was free, the other two were discounted as out of season merchandise

My cat was "on sale" too. I had checked the humane society''s web site about pricing prior to going in, but then when the employee said the price she said they were having a special that week. It was the strangest thing ever!

I never buy (or lease) new cars...biggest waste of money IMO. Slightly used and paying cash suits me fine!

I do not agree with PETS.

While I agree that adopting is a wonderful thing, it is not the best option for everyone. Sometimes I get a little angry with people who just push and push and push the pet adoption issue. I would love to adopt a pet someday and I do believe that these animals really do need and deserve loving homes, but frankly, I LOVE MY NON-ADOPTED, NON-NEUTERED, PURE BREED AMERICAN BULLDOG. That we got from a breeder. YES, A BREEDER!!!!

ETA: I'm not yelling at anyone here, I just think that this is a very sensitive and personal choice, as it is such an important choice. I got a little miffed to see it on this list.

Our pets should not be placed in a category with DVD's and jewelry. They are far more important.

waterlily - too bad we can''t exchange info. I''d probably pay shipping for a fish tank :P Oh well

I''m going to have to disagree to some extent to not buying Ikea furniture new. I''ve never been able to move it more than once without it falling apart if it''s something you have to assemble. There''s a reason I refer to it as the Old Navy of furniture.

I''m trying to grasp why Ikea is so popular if it just falls apart. Can anyone offer some insight?

I have not regretted for a minute buying my MINI new and made to order, even though I had to wait 6 weeks to get it. At that time it would have cost me more to buy a used MINI, and I loved having one of the first in my area. As for new vs used cars generally, I'm a very low mileage driver, and getting a car with say 50K miles is for me like getting a 5-year old car, even if it's only one or two calendar years old. Frankly, I'd rather enjoy the new car, put those miles on there myself, and have the lower mileage advantage when I sell (many years later). Does it pencil out? Not at all! And I don't care!

ETA I read a lot. I use the library and buy used books at thrift shops, but I also buy new books at my local neighborhood bookseller and then pass them on when I'm done. I figure I'm doing my part to keep the circle going!
