Argyle pink/blue diamonds without an argyle colour grading?

Hi guys,

I'm going through the process of designing my men's wedding band and looking at incorporating a small argyle blue diamond. Seems like they are pretty rare and different shops have different things to show me.

So I've come across some BL1, BL2, BL3 and BL3+ diamonds, however one very interesting diamond I've come across is an 0.05 diamond that has a lot number but no argyle color grading attached to it. All it has is "Blue / Grey". The color of this stone compared to the others I've seen is that it is a darker deeper violet color than the usual violet/blue one gets from the other BL grading I've seen...

The store says that the Argyle mines don't always put color ratings to their stones but that it is indeed from the mine as it has a lot number attached. Also this store is one of the listed ateliers on the Argyle site so I think they'd be trustworthy. Does this sound right?

Understand that it is hard to confirm these things as it is a small stone hence no argyle cert, inscription etc.

Also how can we use an Argyle lot number to search up more information?

Thanks guys!

I've tried already. No luck :(

I'm trying to work out whether this intriguing diamond is worth buying or not. Will need to make a decision on it in the next 2 days.

I don't really care for argyle gradings, although they are interesting to know what color grade they would give it. Does the stone come with a GIA report for the color? Do you have any photos you can post? You mention it has a lot number, I would associate a lot number with a tender auction? Or perhaps the stone was part of some smaller stone parcel lots they auctioned off? I read somewhere they sometimes have private or mini-tender auctions. I assume the other argyle diamonds you refer to that you have come across with color grades came with an argyle certificate that specified the color grade? I know some older argyle stones had laser inscriptions but did not have certificates available. And then there are stones that I have come across that the vendor said came from the argyle mine, and most likely did but there is no documentation to prove it.

At that size it was probably from a "Lot", meaning it has an Argyle rating but was in a parcel of more then one diamond of that color. As an example I just sold a .10 ct Argyle Blue from a parcel of 20 stones. There isn't a GIA or an Argyle singular certificate.

Did you try googling the lot #?

That's exactly right! That's what I was told!

And yeah in that size it doesn't have a GIA cert nor and Argyle cert. Googling lot number comes out with nothing. It's lot number is 343494. Is there an easy way for any traders of jewellers here to find out anything from that lot number?

30yearsofdiamond - have you come across any argyle coloured diamonds sold that didn't have an argyle rating?

Oh yes, no photos unfortunately as this was walking into a store front. Feel kinda funny if I asked to take a photo but even then I don't think it'll come out well on phone camera :)

Re: Argyle pink/blue diamonds without an argyle colour gradi

Well, at that size it was likely not graded by Argyle, however, even if it is a small stone, I would want at least a GIA certificate for an Argyle blue. Most vendors provide GIA reports, if only color origin and identification, even on 10 point or smaller blues and pinks, reds, etc. Due to the price I would insist on at least a GIA report. If your stone is not lasered, there is no way to prove otherwise that it is a natural blue diamond and you definitely do not want to pay that price for an HPHT. Not sure what is done normally in the case of parcels but would assume that vendors selling retail would certify the stones therein unless they are very tiny melee. Perhaps a 5 pointer is a borderline case but what you can do if you love the stone and it has no report is that you take it to GIA yourself and make the sale contingent on natural color and diamond.

Re: Argyle pink/blue diamonds without an argyle colour gradi

All good :)

I ended up trying my luck emailing the Argyle mines with the lot number thinking they'd never reply but they ended up replying with the size, shape and colour of the gem from just me providing the lot number and it's the same details as what i was presented with by the store so that gave me a bit more confidence on what i was being offered.

I ended up getting this gem and it is now in the process of being incorporated into my wedding band! excited to see what it will look like as part of the ring!

Didn't end up asking for a GIA cert as the process of getting that done will take over a month according to the GIA timelines and it's only 0.05ct... and well i'm getting married in 3 weeks so.... hahaha

Thanks everyone for your help!
