Are you bothered by spelling and grammar errors on a forum? Or do you just ignore and read through them?

Nope. Mostly because I''m a huge violator.

Just today I meant to say "the guy that weighs 400lbs" and instead I said "the guy that ways 400lbs"

It depends upon the kind of error. My grammar isn't that great, so I don't judge people on that

.

The only three major pet peeves that drive me nuts are the following:

When people spell a lot as one word, "alot," or spell it as "allot."

When people put the period or comma outside of the quotations, such as "a lot", or "allot". Totally bugs the crap out of me.

When people do not capitalize their sentences and do the above mistakes on top of that. she said, "i like allot of diamond shapes". Annoying.

Beyond that, I just ignore all the minor mistakes.

No, not at all.

What does bother me is when someone else posts a correction, which I find to be rude and unneccessary.

I think my own errors that I don''t catch before I post and then find later bother me the most! I''m a teacher so I come by it honestly.

I''d be lying if I said spelling and grammar errors didn''t bother me at all, but we''re human and I think tend to think faster than we type. I find it hardest to read posts that use a lot of text/IM short cuts.

Totally. Especially if you''re in a debate with that person and they correct your spelling to distract from the fact that they do not have a rebuttal.

It only bothers me when it stretches to the point of making something difficult to understand. I figure that we all make mistakes from time to time in our typing, spelling, and/or grammar so I''m pretty forgiving about that, but when there are enough errors to make it difficult to understand a post, then it starts to bug me.

They bug me like crazy. I know they shouldn't. But they do. I know not everybody is a spelling and grammar freak like I am, but oh my goodness does it bug me. I mentally fix sentences and spelling errors. They always trip me up and I can't finish the sentence until I mentally correct the errors.

ETA: I do want to say, though, that unless somebody specifically asks for me to correct things, I merely wince inwardly and move on. I can't stand self-righteous grammar and spelling freaks that have to correct everything.

Seriously, sometimes I am so keen to have my say that I type too quickly and do not proof read. I hope that my posts are intelligible but do not worry if my spelling is poor (sorry). If my grammar is incorrect, it is probably because I am unaware of my bad grammar. I will misspell frequently but I hope that my grammar is accurate for the most part.

I tend to read over spelling mistakes - sometimes I have to re-read if the misspelling makes nonsense of the comment, but that is ok by me. But consistently bad grammar will cause me to skip over that user''s posts. It is too much like hard work to read some posts.

This is exactly how I feel.

I'm sure I make mistakes as most everyone does. As long as I understand what they're saying I usually don't care (but can't say that I don't notice, because I definitely do), but I just read a sentence that looked like it came out of Flowers for Algernon. I couldn't even imagine how that person decided to use the incorrect spelling and grammar that she did, especially as a native English speaker (which I know that she is).

I don't mean to criticize, but it really made me pause to think about it!

Ugh, I just noticed a mistake in one of my posts above. Now I''m paranoid! Errors left and right!

Yep. (Stupid law review!)

I'm bothered by your odacity.

J/K. Some errors drive me CRAZY and I want to correct people so they don't continue to make the error in public.

However, I am a terrible speller. So there's that.

Spelling doesn't bother me but using the incorrect word (i.e., loose instead of lose, bear instead of bare) does bother me a TON. It shouldn't, but it does.

Too much IM speak also bothers me greatly.

Ok I am confused.

Could you help me out here MC?

I always have issues when I am quoting. Which is correct?

1. Mary said "no sugar before bed".

or

2. Mary said "no sugar before bed."

I would use 1 because I have quoted and am now finishing my sentence. I would not use 2 as although I have finished the sentence in the quote, I have not finished the sentence which included the quote.

I certainly agree, though I've been guilty of this in the past. I always feel conflicted about it and rarely do it, but sometimes I just can't help myself. I don't mean any harm by it.

One particular time that comes to mind, I was "correcting" (I guess) the wording in someone's signature, which was a quote. Since it was supposed to be a quote, I let her know what the wording was supposed to be. I meant absolutely no malice, just wanted to let her know. She argued and ended up getting very angry over it... but come on, she was incorrectly quoting someone, shouldn't that be the exception to the no-correcting rule?

I guess that's not really the same, though. I will never outright say "you spelled that wrong" or "that should be __________." Sometimes I do make sure to use their incorrectly spelled word in my post, spelled the correct way

Accept and except. My mission in life is to get people to understand the difference. However, people rarely ask, so I almost never get to help. Deep breaths.

Ditto! I''m not a teacher, but I do have a BA in English - so when I make a mistake it drives me batty.

Otherwise I don''t stress about it. I type faster than I type as well.

Yep, me too. And not because I don''t believe in/care about good spelling/grammar, but I do the same thing you gave an example of. I just have these stupid "brain blips" and type the wrong thing, or I just type a word wrong, and don''t catch it til it''s too late.

I really wish there wasn''t a time limit on our posts.

Steel, #2 is always correct. If the sentence is ending with the quote, the punctuation always goes inside.

It doesn''t feel intuitive to me, either.

YAY! You asked a question! Haha.

Okay, example one, the period goes inside the quotation marks because the sentence and the quotation are finished. Example two would actually have a comma in place of a period. (Mary said, "No sugar before bed," even though she would have a cookie after her son went to sleep.)

Not at all. I know sometimes I am typing fast and don''t notice a spelling or grammar error in my own posts. I try not to take life too seriously and let small things bug me.

The second one is correct. "Punctuation goes inside quotation marks."

Your theory is correct when referring to parenthesis though. Punctuation goes outside of parenthesis, unless the entire sentence is in parenthesis.

Yes, I always do number 2 as well (even if the quote is at the end of sentence) because I am mentally finishing the sentence. Plus I feel like it is easier for others to read. But I guess that is wrong!

DITTO!!

Oops, sorry. I should have included the correct way.

Yep, the period or comma is inside the quotation. Really, though, seeing that mistake in posts isn't what bugs me as much as when it's in printed form, such as a magazine or newspaper.

The post example above, the correct way should have been, "She likes a lot of diamond shapes."

Quick question for savvy members here. In my diamond sentence example in this post, should there be a comma after the word "been?"

If anyone's really interested, this website was my lifesaver in college when I had random grammar questions:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/

Over on the right hand side you can navigate to all sorts of different topics.

ETA: I had to come in here and correct a spelling error. LOL!
