Hi All,

I was taking some close up pictures of my engagement ring, and I noticed that when you zoom in you can see these little white spots/specks in the diamond.

I tried cleaning the ring in jewelry cleaner, but the spots/specks still show up when I take close up pictures.

Is this normal?? What are these things?? Does it have anything to do with the fact that I''m using a high megapixel camera and I''m taking high quality pictures??

Soooo confused (and kind of concerned).

Well, if the stone is an SI something clarity and has a bunch of scattered white inclusions it could be those you''re picking up.

More likely it is dust. Diamonds are like wee dirt-magnets. Even if you just cleaned it, it can definitely have dirt hiding under the prongs, or lint from whatever you used to dry it, or whatever. It is realllly hard to get all the dust specks off a diamond!

If you just received it, or just had it worked on, I''ve heard of people having some sort of polishing compound stuck to their stones, which apparently is tough to get off at home and might need a jeweler with an ultrasonic cleaner to get it off.

Kenny has some good diamond cleaning tips- if you search his posts you should be able to find them... he has a whole process involving alcohol and that canned air stuff

You could take it to a local jeweler and get it cleaned, and then loupe it immediately to see if it is still speckly.

Ditto LGK...

Looks like dust, probably on the pavillion side. I clean my diamond a lot and always seem to have some sort of dust left on it. After a good cleaning, micro fiber cloths are great for removing some of the dust if you can get in the space between the prongs.

Thanks everyone..

The stone is VS1 and the GIA cert and appraisal report don''t show any sort of inclusions that are like this, so you''re probably right and it''s dust *phew*.

Thanks for providing me ease of mind!

Looks like dust or the residue left when water dries.

Thanks, Dreamer :D
