Are these good stones for 4 ctw stud earrings?

Those aren't vs2's. Those are SI's. They are gorgeous! for sure. No one is going to see any inclusions in your ear though. From a resale stand point down the line [if it ever happened] you would not get vs2 pricing on them]. BUT they look to be an okay deal. Have you seen the promotion on 2 carat lightbox diamonds? They're cleaner and slightly smaller.

I haven’t I’ll check it out! I think I never looked at lightbox previously as I thought maybe smaller jewelers would have better quality lab diamonds? I know when we made my mined diamond ring that seemed to be the case..!

for studs, what characteristics should I screen for that would give me the white and sparkly effect but still be considered a good deal?

Actually just took a look at their certificate and it says VS2, where can I find that they’re mislabeled?

Let me rephrase my comments.. they look like SI's with the carbon spots to ME*. But in your ears at a *distance* no one will be able to see them. But I'm not a gemologist. Still, $5k for those at that carat seems steep to me.

use rarecarat.com to search for better cleaner options like this one:

I can see some obvious growth layers/grain in both of those CVD diamonds, which can (not always) pose some issues with the way they appear.

As suggested by blingmeupscotty, definitely check out the LightBox 2 carat options:

Maybe take a look at these.

I just purchase two 2 ctw round brilliants from Lightbox for 2880 total. I am having them set into basket set studs. Will share as soon as they are ready! (the stones are gorgeous, and my local jeweler said his source would charge 4k per stone) :)
