Are there any jewelers that will work with a customers gold?

I have an inherited chunky monkey gold ring from the 80s. It's my husband's grandmother's ring, and I'd like to revamp into a more modern style. I know I could trade in the gold value, but I would rather work with the original gold. If that's not possible, I'll reset the centerstone and leave it as is, because I think it's special to have that connection to her with the actual gold she wore. Anyways, are you aware of any jewelers that are willing to work with customers gold, or is that really an absolute longshot?

Sara Commers made a gold ring for me using the gold from my class ring that I didn't wear. I highly recommend her and have used her for many of my projects for over a decade. She's also done work for multiple friends of mine who have all been happy

Is it possible? Sure, but it will likely come at an added cost. Most jewelers are happy to take in a customer’s jewelry for scrap, and credit them the value. But to use a customer’s own gold they will first have to refine the gold and then alloy it again as per their specifications.

I remember watching a YT video of Modern Goldsmith doing something along those lines so I know it’s feasible. But it would add a cost for sure.

That's my understanding too, in that it is possible to re-use customer's gold, however, it would add cost due to added procedures to melt, refine and assay the gold etc...

If it’s not that jewelers niche or they don’t happen to be a real close personal friend - If they didn’t charge extra for the service
I’d be questioning if ‘my’ gold actually got reused.

If it isn't someone who doesn't have incentive not to use your gold it's safe to presume that they won't

I have a few jewellers willing to reuse gold for new pieces. They won't use white gold though cause the cost to refine it doesn't make sense.

I guess it depends on your piece and what you've got to work with. Gold prices are so high right now and I'm planning to make a bangle which is quite heavy and it's going to cost $$$$. I'll see what the jeweller says in a few weeks when they give me a quote.
