The basic answer is yes, b/c once you throw in a lot of diamonds (lady's watch) it becomes a piece of diamond jewelry not a watch. IOW, Think of it like a Ford with a $100K paint job. Expensive men's watches are based on its complications the more complications the more expensive, plus the detailed finish of its movement. Couple of expensive pocket watches.

In 2002 I had the opportunity of ordering a Dufour simplicity watch. The watch was selling for $38K in RG, but the waiting period was 3 yrs and he wants 1/3 of the money up front. All the parts are hand made put together by Dufour himself he is a one man show. The hand detailed finishes of his watches are top notch. This simple watch today would easily fetch over $150K today.

Another regret is that I didn't buy a F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu for $16K In 2015. Today a pre-owned watch are trading hands in the $70K range. In 2015 I could of bought a few nice pre-owned in the 10-$11K range.

Mens watches are generally bigger, I would think that it takes more time to hand manufacture the larger parts given the relative sizes. Is that a factor?

What annoys me is that you can’t find a good, high quality women’s skeleton watch and I’ve looked.
