Are .75 ct. rounds too large for side stones on a 3-stone ring?

And what size/shape of center stone would you use? I've been fooling around with different ideas and all I can come up with that would look good proportionally is out of my budget, especially for a round center stone. I did find an oval gemstone measuring 9 x 6.6 mm that I think might work. Kinda wanted a diamond though.

The side diamonds measure about 5.9 mm and my ring size is 5.5. Thanks in advance for your help.

ETA: I posted this in SMTR because I was hoping someone might have a photo of a 3-stone ring with .75 ct. round sides and ANY type of center stone.

I would say they''d look great with either rounds or ovals. I would say at least a 7mm round or 8 x 6 oval would be a good size to go with them. I can''t wait to see what you do.

Have you seen the GOG new cushion OMC? I was thinking of this as a center stone and heart shape on each side. Just a thought. Can''t wait to see what you come up with.

hi NEU :)

i have a 3 stone with .7 sides. unfortunately, this ring is a size 8, so i'm not sure if this will be a great deal of help. i had a hard time capturing its proportions as it seemed to 'bleed away' in this light. but i wanted to get something to you asap, so i hope these help :)

last one - hope this helps, NEU! just FYI, the eternity band is made up of 20 x 13.5pt stones - 2.68ctw

Hi there! I am also a size 5.25 - 5.5, and (for example) 0.8ct facing up at 6.0mm will give you roughly 33% finger coverage. So, with the stone you have mentioned, you are going to get complete finger coverage, if not even a smidge over the edges.

To be totally honest, I do not like the look of ''diamond overhang''. It looks like you have purposefully selected stones that are too big for your fingers. If you don''t mind this look, then go for it, however, I would be careful to make sure you don''t overdo the 100% coverage mark.

Just my 2 cents though.

hey honey :)

i''ve had rings with bigger spreads than the lowest point of my finger, but a higher arch can always be done to accommodate them. also, the larger the stones, the deeper they are, so the higher they have to sit off your finger - giving you a longer arc anyway. setting the center stone slightly higher and changing the angle of the side stones slightly so that it''s steeper will also allow you to have stones across the top of your finger whose combined width is wider that the width of your finger measured at skin level.

with stones of .75 and above, the arc or the ring would be considerably longer and higher than the distance from side to side of her finger, so it shouldn''t be a problem.

just on that - i used to play bridge with a number of jewish ladies who had ENORMOUS 3 stone rings - i mean breathtaking! they often had skinny little fingers, but their diamonds (which were massive!) were always set so they could be fully seen!!

the key is probably to make sure you use a good jeweler who is skilled with proportions and setting stones so that they best compliment you, rather than a stock standard setting.

Hi Whitby, I love your three stone ring. Is that a peach color diamond?

just love it!!!!
Some ladies here at PS can really come up with some stunning piece. Wow!!!

Wow, thanks everybody for the thoughtful responses. My dream setting is the Auquaduct from Walter McTeigue (see below) with the yellow side diamonds and possibly the center stone set into yellow gold, with the band in platinum.

Marcyc, 7 mm round would probably keep me near budget, but do you think the size is too close to 5.8 mm or is there enough contrast? Maybe I'm analyzing it too much. The .75 ct. side diamonds are light yellow, so there would be that contrast.

Joelly, I think the new GOG chunky cushions are so cool, but wonder what they will look like with ideal cut RBs. I have asked Jonathan to shoot me a video just to see.

LostSapphire, thanks for posting that link. Your ring is stunning. If I could afford a 2 ct., I would be looking no further! LOL!!!!

Whitby, your ring looks so cool! What kind of center stone is that? My ring will be the reverse: my side diamonds are going to be light yellow. I am thinking I might have to opt for a gemstone, because all the rings I see posted that I love the proportions on have at least a 1.75+ ct. center. This for a right hand ring, so a diamond that size is out of the question since I don't want to outshine the 1.05 ct. Jubilee on my new wedding set. A .80 ct. would be more realistic. Also, good point about the "arc" when setting the stones. The setting I REALLY want sets the stones side to side without too much of an arc, from what I can tell.

Honey, I know what you mean about the "overhang" look. I don't like it much either because it makes the ring look like it is too big. Going with an oval would probably prevent that.

My photo was too large to attach. I'll resize and repost.

Here it is from the gallery view which shows there is no room for overhang, so I have to be careful of the center stone size.

Its gonna be a stunning one. I am just tooo naughty because I wonder if you should be getting three stone of OMC or OEC instead. hehehehehehe.....just a thought.....bad Joelly!!!

You and I have the same taste. I love that 3 stone and want one like that myself. I also have 2 .75 OECs and wonder about a center stone. I had just about decided to make the center one only slightly larger (like a .9 for instance) or even have them all the same size.

I love that 3 stone ring. How big is the center in that photo? I love the bezels

MMT, I don''t know the stone sizes in that ring. Walter McTeigue did say that he thought that my side stones would be the perfect size, so no problems there.

tradergirl, I was thinking the same thing. That way I could afford a diamond center if I stuck to around .80 to .90. I guess the stone sizes in the photo look similar. And on mine, they would be light yellow and have some contrast.

joelly, nice idea! But I have to use the stones I am getting. If I ever get an OEC, I''m getting a big one!

Thanks everybody, this project will definitely take some time, but I''ll post what I eventually end up with!
