apprasial - done before setting or after?

Hi,

I have purchased a .7ct H AGS (0 cut, 0 symmetry, 0 polish) and am having it set by Gelin Abaci. My question is this: is it advantageous or preferred for me to get the stone appraised before it is set? I am only really interested in an apprasial for insurance purposes. The stone is laser inscribed and I am confident that the stone I purchased is the stone I am holding as my local jeweller showed me the inscription, and inspected the stone himself.

Any help would be appreciated!

What I did is have my appraiser certify my diamond lose first, then after they have been set I will have him examine the whole ring again to check (1) if the stones are the original ones, and (2) get a overall value for insurance purpose.

The usual reasons to have a loose stone inspected prior to setting are:

1) To provide shopping information to help make a decision to keep or reject the stone. This can include matching the stone to the lab report, independent grading, and/or additional services like cut grading and photography, comparison of several stones and valuation services that may be useful in your decision.

2) To provide documentation for insurance during the setting process. Some insurance will cover this and some won’t but all that I know of will require an independent inspection beforehand. Some jewelers cover losses while in they’re working on it and some don’t. I’m pretty sure Gelin Abache does but their individual dealers may not. Ask.

The usual reasons to have a new piece of jewelry appraised are:

3) Provide insurance documentation that includes specifications for a possible replacement and sets a value that allows the insurance company to create a contract.

4) To confirm that the craftsmanship is up to the clients standards, that all materials used are correct and that nothing has been damaged in the process.

It sounds like 1&2 don’t apply in your case so I would recommend getting the appraisal done after the setting.
