Is the stone certified? If it is a GIA or AGS stone and you can check the price on here to be sure it is in line, then I''d just have the appraisal done after it is set if the purpose is for insurance. The GIA or AGS lab has already provided an independent evaluation of the stone''s quality. The person doing the setting may also be willing to provide you with an insurance appraisal.
If the stone is not GIA or AGS certified, then you need an appraisal before the return period is up on the stone.
Also it depends on the reasoning for you wanting the appraisal. Some prefer a very detailed appraisal done with the diamond unmounted in case of the need to replace the diamond if it gets damaged/ stolen etc. That way it can be helpful in order to get a very similar replacement rather than just a 1 carat round from anywhere. Cases here have proved the great value of such appraisals in the past.
I just went through this experience and had it appraised loose (to verify cert) and then again when it was set.
As one of the other posters stated -- it''s easier to see color when loose. Plus, the appraiser could get a better look at clarity as there were no prongs to cover inclusions.
Then do you have it appraised again when it is set?
I just had a stone appraised loose and got it shipped to me today. Going to get it set 2 hours away from me. Should I then send it back to the appraiser to appraise again?
Thanks to everyone for your replies. I just had my stone shipped to me and I wanted to have it appraised loose before I set it to confirm that it matches the GIA report. At the same time I wanted to have the GIA # laser engraved on the diamond. I was also thinking of useing this appraisal for insurance purposes, so that I have the diamond insured before I have it set (just in case something happens during the setting process). I think the only disadvantage is that I will have to go though it all again once I buy a nice setting. I just think I would rather spend the time for peace of mind. Any thoughts? Good idea? Paranoid?
