I''ve settled on a stone (more to come on that later).

The lab report came from GIA, but it was details in the Sarin report (crown and pav angles) that made it a real candidate. My inspection appears to confirm the quality of the cut, but I''d like a professional and independent verification/confirmation of the Sarin report details.

EGL runs a lab near my local jeweler and has offered to provide those details (a full EGL report + the angles) which will cost about $100. So...

Is that sufficient? Should I consider anything else? Since my jeweler has facilitated this special request and appraisal for me, should I have an additional independent appraisal as well? Will an independent be able to verify crown and pav angles?

Many thanks,
Jeff

EGL is known for its liberal gradings--getting another cert if you''ve already got a GIA confirmation is odd. I would get a local reputable independent appraiser to look at the stone, they definitely should exist and the procedure should be familiar to the jeweler. An indepedent should be able to verify the stone AND give you an expert opinion on whether you got your money''s worth and how good a cut the stone is.

Jeff,

Of course, this is all very weird, if you''re reading the discussions here, and may be motivated to check your "angles" at least in part because of the discussions you''re reading here...and rightly so.

Though ordinarily, GIA would trump EGL, given your explicit purpose:

What you''re thinking of doing is probably reasonable, as I don''t think EGL particularly compromises on its reporting of measurements, has quality measuring equipment, and I think you''ll be able to accomplish what you''re trying to do...perhaps to a good purpose.

Options to consider; note I''m not an expert, where others may be able to say now, better,

- ask EGL what equipment they''d use to measure proportions, and unless others already know, report here, and get a a confirmation it will be sufficient. Probably others will say it''s got to be better. Still, EGL has been accused of rounding, too, and so I''m not entirely sure, and you don''t want to run into this twice.

- if you''ll go this route, perhaps consider just going perhaps less conveniently, but to AGS instead for the same purpose.

- go to one of the listed appraisers on this board, for a more broad based and multipurpose visit...to check the proportions, check the overall qualities of the stone, and to get an appraisal report that you can also use for insurance.

Regards,
