I live in Maryland. I am looking into purchasing a ring online. Once I get the ring, I want to have it appraised to make sure I got what I paid for. I am having trouble finding an appraiser that doesn''t send it out taking 2-4 weeks. The return time for the ring is 7 days so I need to have it appraised within that time. How will I do this? Anyone have experience with this?

Also, if I want to add it to my policy with State Farm do I just bring the appraisal with me?

Thanks so much!

Contact James Jolliff, JEI Enterprises located in GIngerville, near Annapolis. He is the ex chief of NAJA and does independent appraising.

If Dave''s contact isn''t available, see if they will send it to one of the reputable appraisers who participate here, (Dave Atlas, Rich Sherwood, Neal, etc...) before you purchase it so that you still have a return period once you get it. I''ve done this with several vendors, and it has always worked well. You may have to pay for an extra shipping charge, but that isn''t bad in the grand scheme of things.

Being in Maryland we have many customers that ask that same question. We always refer customers to Martin Fuller. However, he''s not in Maryland. So depending upon exactly where in Maryland you are located will dictate how close or far you are from Martin. His office is in northern Virginia. Martin comes highly recommended. I''ve attached his contact information just in case you would like to give him a call. : )

Do you have contact info. for James Jolliff? I can''t seem to find any.

BD,

See this thread, also from Dave, and also, check out Part II of Location #1 in my thread below my signature on using appraisers. I''m from MD, too, and unfortunately, if you''re seeking a numerical evaluation of cut, local appraisers largely won''t be able to help you, anyway. If you''re seeking a round, unless your option is already certed by AGS, I''d give serious consideration to sending it off to one of the appraisers referenced frequently on this board...whether it''s on your vendor''s dime or yours.

Regards,

It''s for a wedding set, circa 1950''s, that I mentioned on this thread:

Although long-term I would like a full-fledged appraisal for insurance purposes, the immediate need is to make sure the ring and diamond are what the seller say they are, and is it priced in the right ballpark? I only have it for about two weeks, so the long and or unknown delay with registered mail would use a lot of that up.

What you are asking for is two appraisals.

First for an opinion that the price you paid and the quality of the stone/ring is reasonable for the MARKET IN WHICH YOU purchased it.

Secondly, for the purpose of acquiring insurance coverage. This value has to have proper analyisis for how the insurance company will settle a claim if you have one. The methodology of making the value conslusion between the two are different.

RE: State Farm - Ask the agent for a copy of the policy. READ IT VERY CAREFULLY. Regardless of what the agent tells you, your claim will be settled EXACTLY the way the policy reads.

Then call a Chubb Agent. Unless State Farm offers a stated value, all risk policy, you should compare how your claim would be handled.

Chubb''s policies are stated value, all risk policies. They will even insure your stone before it is set, in case the setter damages it, lost in shipment, or lost in the store.

I went to Fuller and Associates recently and they were wonderful! Like Josh said above, depending on where in MD you are, they are located in Tysons Corner, behind Tysons II/Galleria.

Their website seems to be having some problems. I did not meet with Martin, but another gentleman, whose name i cant remember at the moment (and why i went to the website). He was fun to talk, has tons of experience in the jewelry world and i was impressed when he immediately recognized the jewelers stamp on my wedding band... it is a tiny company in Pennsylvania.

I would totally trust them to give you an honest apprasial!

I''ve tried calling them quite a few times and left messages, but they never answer or return calls.

(Fuller and Associates that is)

Hmm... the first time i called, i left a message that wasnt returned. I called a second time and spoke with Martins wife i believe. She was super. How many times have you called? Another thing is the building they are in is being renovated or something like that. They have lost their phone lines a couple times. I would try and give them another call.

njc, thanks! They finally did call me back after I got home from driving to Annapolis to have them appraised by James Jolliff. I was in a hurry, and he sounds like he''ll be good.

BTW, I always wanted to tell you that I love your Tacori solitaire setting! I saw that when I was engaged and almost got it. For solitaire, that is one of my favorites.

Just in case anyone is looking for contact info. for James Jolliff (which wasn''t easy to find), I think this is it:
