appraisal and insurance???!

Okay, guys, I live in Indiana. Where on earth do I find an appraiser for my stone?? I am so afraid of some jeweler switching it out with a cz or somthing while it is being done, too. I really want to be able to insure the STONE before I leave it in the hands of an appraiser and I would think I could get it appraised for the purchase price but Jewelers Mutual seems to not allow this. I just want it insured before i take it somewhere! Also if I have to drive to Chicago or wherever else to get it appraised I''d like it insured while I am walking around in Chicago with it!!!!

so my questions are, um, do you know of any insurance company that could insure for purchase price for the duration of like a week while i go to have it appraised.

and...where would I find an appraiser? there arent any under PS "resources" in indiana. i guess i could drive somewhere to have it done, if i did that, how long would it usually take them to appraise it? For instance we drive to missouri a lot for weekends so if i were to stop by St. Louis if there were an appraiser there i could have it done, but only if it took 1 hour max, and not like 2 weeks.

aaaargghhhhh. this is all so ridiculous, ive never ever worried about my jewelery this much before. probably because the most expensive jewelry i''ve owned until now cost $70

did you try googling independant appraisers in your area, or in missouri? you just need to start calling around to find out what services are available and schedule an appointment.

There are many appraisers with "mobile" labs so that they can actually drive to your residency if you prefer them to do so.

Also, there''s no need to fear during the actual appraisal - you can actually sit there the whole time as they appraise the stone for you, if you wish (and I''d recommend that).

I highly doubt that online vendors would intentionally swap your diamond with one that''s of lower quality.

i called bluenile and they told me to go on this isa-appraisers.org site and the only appraiser in my town is this jewerly store that we really do not like so we dont want to go there. an independent appraiser would be much better i think...

i really wish i could have Jeweler''s Mutual insure it based on retail price for the time being while i am going to get it appraised but they said that was unacceptable unfortunately. :-/

and i dont think homeowners would cover this type of thing? we''d have to have one of our parents add it to their homeowners if it would but id rather not talk to them about it unless its a real possibility cause we arent quite engaged yet

I will suggest this - although maybe it would or maybe wouldn''t be a solution to your "problem".

I would go to www.totaldollar.com Call their toll free number and ask for Bill Castro.

He is a Chubb agent licensed in all the states, and Chubb does NOT require an official appraisal to cover you.

They will want a copy of the grading report and a description of the ring, and possibly your receipts.

Perhaps that will work for you.

thanks RockDock, i already talked to Chubb and my ring is valued below 5,000 dollars so they wont do anything for me.

i think Jewelers Mutual has said it would be okay to send in "documentation" which doesn''t necessarily need to be an appraisal? im not sure now.

they said,

"That will be fine..as long as you have documents with descriptions and values for each the setting and stone, that is all we need to come along with the application."

that sounded like i can make up my own appraisal documents, almost.

Yes I know some of the Chubb agents are a little picky about having a level of value as a minimum. Sorry that yours doesn''t have the value they require. The agent has a cost in setting up the policy, and if the insured amount is low ( at least low in their minds) they end up losing money.

But sounds like JM will insure you.

Some of these vendors include an appraisal with the ring, and that is enough to put it on insurance. I do not know what Blue NIle includes, but if they give you a description of the ring and stone(s) and you have the certificate for the center diamond, then you may have all you need. It is not always necessary to get a full independent appraisal.

Where did you get the diamond?
Where are you getting the mounting?
Where are you going to get it set?
Ask the jeweler who sold it to you to provide you with documentation about the diamond and ask the jeweler who is providing the mounting to write up an ‘appraisal’ of what they intend to do, including the details of the diamond from the above report. JM should be willing to bind a policy based on this that will cover you while the stone is being set and beyond.

There are several good appraisers in Chicago who will be happy to let you watch the entire process. We get asked this often.

I agree with diamondseeker that if the purpose is to comply with the minimum standards of the insurance company, an appraisal is often unnecessary. The selling jewelers can provide you with 'free' documentation for that will meet this requirement.

What general area are you in in Indiana? I am in north central and I have 2 favorite places that will give you an appraisal without trouble and are very trustworthy.
