I have a family stone that I am going to use as the center stone of the engagement ring I am proposing with. It is around a 1.8 carat round brilliant. For some reason, we can't find the grading report of the diamond and for appraisal/insurance purposes, I would like to have a GIA grading report for the stone. My question(s) is: How do I get a GIA grading report, without sending it to NY or CA? Also, if I do receive a grading report for the stone, does this help the appraisal process and if not, how do I get it appraised? I am very new to this and I want to make sure that the diamond is going to be insured for everything that it is worth. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Have you got a photocopy, or at least the report number? If so, contact GIA directly and they’ll issue a duplicate report for a reasonable fee. If not, no they can’t give you a report without inspecting the stone. www.gia.edu

Yes, GIA lab papers are useful for appraising and definitely should be referenced in the appraisal when they’re present. In the case of fancy colors where you’re expecting natural origin of color, it’s a BIG deal. If it’s treated and you know it’s treated it’s probably not worth the cost of lab fees, shipping and insurance, especially if you’re not actively buying or selling the piece. Every appraiser I know is accustomed to describing and valuing things that don’t have lab docs with them. There's a list of local appraisers under the tab at the top of the page titled 'resources'.
