Anyone regret going gold for their Engagement Ring?

I am not sure why in mind, I feel like an Engagement Ring should be platinum? I am resetting my ring, and really leaning towards having the gallery in platinum and shank in gold this time around, simply because I really no longer wear white gold? I wear 2 Cartier love bracelets (both gold) and a small diamond pendant (also gold), and my watch is two tone gold and silver... My earrings? Also gold...see a trend? I only purchase gold jewelry now, which is a complete 180 from even 5 years ago. I keep thinking I may regret going gold, because what if styles change, yet again, and they will...

But I keep reminding myself that I have already invested in staple pieces in GOLD, so why am I like this?! I originally had my Engagement ring set in a platinum simple setting flanked by 2 bullets, then re-set 5 years later to a Halo, completely encrusted in Pave, it was also platinum...now that I am upgrading, I would like to make this my final stop (I know never say never, but based on DH, I'm pretty sure this is all she wrote).

Would love your insight into this, and how you decided?

I'm also not sure. And I have no idea where and how this notion that platinum is superior appeared. Platinum has its drawbacks, too, and it's really a matter of which metal is best suited for the specific project.

Gold hasn't gone out of style for literally thousands of years, so I wouldn't worry about that happening now. Your personal preferences might change in several years, and that's totally okay, but you have no way of foreseeing it. And anyway, if you have jewellery in both colours, you can simply rotate between what you want in any particular moment.

For what it's worth, and provided you enjoy both white and yellow as metal colours, going two-tone might be the practical choice. My wedding band is two tone for this precise reason - I wanted to be able to wear it with whatever.

Thank you...such sound advice. It's crazy how we can overthink these projects! I feel like two tone is probably the best...however, if my stone is really warm, I think I will definitely go all gold! So I may have to let the stone dictate!

I am really into yellow gold right now. My 3 most recent pieces are or set in 18k yellow. (On that note, I am not a fan of 14k.) For years I could not stand yellow, thought it was too ‘80s. Now, I’m not even into wearing pendants set in white. Yet, with all that said, I still have white metal for my diamond ring. There’s something about it being for the diamond ring (and my studs) that I feel is timeless. However, I don’t have platinum, I have white gold. I have had platinum in the past in a variety of setting phases I’ve been through (like you) but I don’t care for the patina aging look of plat and I don’t like the weight. I like the high shine and super “white” of white gold as well as the lighter weight. It’s a hard decision when it is supposed to be “the final one” and since you are vacillating on this you may want to think hard on this. Are you open to white gold? It’s a totally different aesthetic to platinum so maybe if you are on the fence about yellow gold vs plat you give thought to white gold and see if you like it. You don’t have to have everything be “matching”… the diamond ring can stand alone as the most special and important of your jewels.

2-tone all the way! I switched from all platinum and in retrospect don’t know why I was so resistant to gold. All my previous iterations of engagement rings were platinum and I find 2-tone rings to be so much more unique and romantic!

I don’t wear my full platinum or white gold jewellery anymore it doesn’t suit me like it used to. My staple jewellery is all 18k yellow gold. I do like two toned gold, I have a 18k YG and platinum bezel set diamond ring which I love. I have been thinking about changing it into a halo which would still be in 18k YG & platinum.

My ring set is two-tone and I love it. I have the reverse from most since my center is a "P" color AVC. That is set in yellow and the rest is white. My main wedding band is yellow as well.

My rings have no so-called precious metals.
They've all been Titanium or Cobalt Chrome, which leaves much more money for a better diamond.

My budget's best-possible diamond is the only "supposed to" on my radar. ;))

Also, I don't attach any emotional, sentimental, tradition, or meaning to a ring.
It's just a ring.
My husband himself is the precious thing, not some object.

I love a great diamond for its intrinsic qualities.
To me, a setting just holds it.
My ultimate setting would be ... well ... nothing; the diamond would just float above my finger.
To me a tension setting is next best thing, no prongs (jail bars) to obstruckt the side view.

My rings have always been yg since white metals make my skin look green toned. Yg just looks so buttery on me! I have always had yg prongs until now but this time I did platinum prongs. I miss my yellow ones. I never ever wear white metals. You can see in my avatar how yellow suits me. Picture me in silver and it’s just not a fit. I would be considered a bold spring or an autumn.

I feel like we aren’t as guided by what is in “style” as we used to be; yellow gold was what seemed to be the only choice for engagement and wedding rings back in the 1990’s. Today there are so many other influences which means there are so many more choices. Tiffany offers platinum, 18kt yellow and 18kt rose gold options.

I have been making metal choices based on what complements the stone. I reset my J color RB in platinum bezel with 14kt rose gold shank to enhance the subtle warmth of the stone. My recent project (my avatar photo) is I color marquise stone eternity band set in platinum. My next 2 upcoming projects I am planning to use 18kt yellow gold in a brushed finish.

Go with what you like and try not to worry about trends. I wear almost exclusively white metals (partly an instinctual shudder from years of 80s gold). To me, diamonds look fantastic in white. However….after years of seeing all this lush 18k yellow everywhere, I do wonder if I should dip a toe in. And I might.

Your ER and wedding band should be about YOU and what you like. I hear you struggling to determine that. One other thing I’ll offer is that since wedding sets are kind of a permanent fixture, I don’t think they have to match your other metal colors. They simply are. So if you’re worried about staying with platinum for your ER while wearing a lot of yellow gold elsewhere, that’s no big deal.

Thank you for this, you are so right! Just one of my Cartier gold bracelets cost so much more than any setting I’m planning, and I didn’t bat an eye… I’m overthinking, but I plan to out the diamond against different metals when she gets here to see what compliments her most!

I love yellow gold. I’m always drawn to rings set in yellow gold. (With the head in platinum.)

However, I prefer sapphires set in a white metal. And for anniversary rings, I prefer white. I like having both choices.

Advice-seeking posters here are often told to disregard what is currently in style, rather to go with what they personally prefer.
But people vary.
To some it may be important to be in style.

For some, perhaps younger, the social approval of their circle may be more important to a shopper over 40 who may be in a different frame of mind where social approval is a lower a priority than their personal approval.
I wonder whether some feel somewhat unwelcome here on PS.

I say, let 'em be.

I'm gonna try to tell folks, you do you, but if being in style is you, then by all means, do that.

I would not however say, if overpaying for frozen spit graded by JoeSchmo Gem Lab at the local mall is them, I would opt for the usual PS education about diamonds and where to not get ripped off.

I will always push for diamond education about light performance, and finding a vendor with fair prices and great customer service.
I'll never give the advice I see here often, "All that matters is that you love it".
What if they are uneducated - especially about light performance depends on cut - and after education would prefer a well-cut stone?

My first ring was white gold and I personally didn’t like it at all. So I’ve always done two-time since then (white gold prongs and basket, rose gold bands. I’m currently looking for a warmer colored antique OEC though so will probably go with all gold this time around. I mix my metals though and wear white gold stud earring with gold hoops, my wedding band is a white gold eternity band, etc.

I say do whatever you want. You can always change it down the road, lol. I do agree though that I now choose settings that speak to me, and are more timeless and classic versus trendy. I’m 43 if that matters, and really don’t care what the current trend is.

Ha! Same; I’m 43 also, and I am ALL ABOUT WHAT I WANT, lol! I think my original note got twisted somehow, but I did say this is in my head, not really concerned about others- more so I reference trends. I wear all Gold now, even my belt buckles, so I will likely do a two tone. So I totally feel you, this is more about my opinion and what I think feels good to me… thinking two tone is the way to go! Thank you for chiming in!
