After the horse meat topic it got me thinking how many people on here own horses. What breed and what do you do with them.

3 horses for me.

An old retired thouroughbred that is 21 and I've owned him since he was 5. He did pony club, showing and a bit of dressage
A broken down warmblood that is also now retired from an injury
And a arabian warmblood mare. Shes the best horse I've had and I hope to ride her in dressage and showing for many years to come

I don't own horses, but have had riding lessons on and off over my life. I adore them. but am unable to live the lifestyle required to be a good horse owner. I have to love them from afar. :)) My favorite breeds are the western ones - quarter horses, appaloosas, paints. Nothing beats a lazy, fat quarter horse for a rider like me!

Sigh, no horses. I've wanted one all my life but never been able to afford one. If I had room & shekels, I'd have hard-luck rescues, I know. Those of all species seem to find me. Plus a few burros, which I adore.

Tennessee Walkers lived across the road from us for 8 yrs & I loved them! Personality out the wazoo & wonderful gaiting. There's no horse I don't like, though -- love big fellows like Belgians, and even ponies, whom some people say are a pain in the butt -- I like the challenge.

I grew up riding, but haven't owned a horse since I was 16 when my childhood horse went out to pasture.. my mom said.. new Horse or new car? I'm sure you know which one I picked.. the one with a little more horse power.

My horse was just a cow pony. I did a few western games with her only about 14 hands high, but she was all personality.. I always wanted to learn to ride English and jump.

Oww no other horse owners here. I'm glad to see we have some horse lovers and riders here. They really are amazing animals but are a lot harder to keep then your dog or cat

Justginger - The coloured horses are lovely and my sister has palominos so I have a soft spot for them. They really are a "lifestyle " and take up so much time and money. I swear my diamonds would be bigger if I didn't have them. Having just moved from Melbourne to Perth my horse is about to have a total lifestyle change. I hope she likes it here in WA.

JewelFreak - Well its never to late to get one. Lots of people get horses later in life. Tennessee walking horses really are different and not popular in Australia. i don't think I have ever seen one

Mayk - That story make me laugh and they sound like smart parents giving you the ultimatum. A car is more useful and probably cheaper to keep.

Welcome to Perth! :wavey:

I hope you like it here - a bit different to Melbs though. Our weather is awesome though, and so are the west coast sunsets. Will you be agisting your horses or have you bought a big property?

Thank you for the welcome justginger!! I hope I like it here as well. Atm the only person I know is DH, so things are a little bit quiet and lonely but with time I'm sure I"ll meet new people. It's a big change after living in Melb for 30 years. Your right about the weather being awesome. Miss Horsey will have to live on agistment unfortunately as I'm in South Perth.

I don't know if it was different for me due to my age, or the fact that I immigrated from another country, but I found the social scene in Perth extremely hard to break into. It's really insular, people remain friends with the same group of mates from primary school onwards! There are quite a few of us PSers here though, so you know you've always got bling get-togethers to look forward to! We're due for one as soon as HOT gets her DBTY back and I get my new WF stone. :appl:

One of our DD's owns (or is owned by, it's hard to tell ;) ) an Arabian mare, and the other DD has two quarter horses, a mare and her yearling. The quarter horse is the mellowest, sweetest thing, even though she's enormous. The Arabian--not so mellow, but very sweet. We jokingly call her The Princess. She pretty much rules the stables where she lives.

The horsemeat issue is horrifying, IMO. I just saw that horsemeat had turned up in IKEA Swedish meatballs, which makes me very happy I don't eat meat much.

justginger I would love a Perth gtg and I can't believe I missed the last one by a few months. Give me a time and date and I'll be there. Perth does feel like a small town where everyone knows each other. Everyone is constantly stopping in the supermarket and streets to talk to each other. I'm 31 and it's an age where everyone has already made life long friends in a small town. And it doesn't feel super friendly in Perth but that might just me be. I'll have to think of some things to do to meet new people.

Aoife you are right that horses rule your life. Arabians really are the princesses of the horse world. Quarter horses are super super smart and great horses to own

I have a pony. Up until a couple of months ago I had two. Both are/were veterans. My pony club ponies from years ago. We lost my palomino anglo arab pony recently. She was twenty four so a good age. I left them both with family when I moved over here are they were too old and deserved a quite retirement. I grew up on horse back and even used to sleep in the stable with my first pony. I really miss them but all the time I'm moving around so much I can't get another.

One day when I'm properly settled a buy myself a warm blood hunter. Something big a beefy but for now I'll have to settle for a couple more diamonds.

PS Horse-Lovers Thread

You aren't alone. I thought there was one of these threads more recently? Anyway the link above is to a discussion here on PS that you might enjoy. Some horse owners. Some horse lovers.

Love horses! I'm not much for riding, but I love just being around them.

It's so funny you posted this thread, I was just thinking about a PS member, Dragonfly, last night since I haven't seen an update from her in a long time. She's a horse owner and lover, as I'm sure you'll find out if you read the thread TooPatient posted!

We owned an Apaloosa mare named Cricket when I was growing up. We also kept people's horses on my parents' 60 acre farm. I can't remember what breeds they all were. Several of our neighbors also owned horses. My good friend Jill is heavy into the Arabian scene, and another good friend of mine who passed away in 2008 was an owner and breeder of Arabians. Jill can look at an Arabian and tell you exactly who the sire was, and on and on. She lent me The Annotated Quest: Homer Davenport and His Wonderful Arabian Horses recently and I didn't get through all of it but what an amazing and interesting culture.

I've been riding a few times in my life and love it, but it's definitely not a skill of mine. I wish it was!

Monnie-

When I saw this thread I immediately thought of dragonfly411. When I clicked on the link to the Pricescope horse lovers' thread above I didn't see any postings from her (although I wasn't looking carefully), but I always think of her when I think of horses. Someone who did post in that thread and who always, also, loved horses was Lorelei.

Thanks, Deb. I didn't click on the link or read the thread, just assumed it was one of the old horse threads that Dragonfly participated in. It's too bad Lorelei doesn't post anymore, I miss her. Miss DF, too! Hopefully things are going so well for them both outside PS that they don't have time to post.

Smith--cute horses you have there! LOL

They're no trouble at all! They're indoor horses. :D

Me!

Lots to match you: I am also in perth, a horse owner and have an Arabian Warmblood mare!

She is on Agistment too, in Henley Brook. Her name is Philly (Alphaira) 50% Hanoverian 50% Egyptian Arab. I've had her nearly three years now. I showjump (in theory, I don't often compete at this stage but hope to eventually get out more). It's definitely bloody expensive, especially in Perth (as is everything lol).

Where are you keeping your mare?

Clever! No spending money on carrots, candy, grain, or hay! Good for you!

Lots of money saved for bling, then? :naughty:

I don't mean to threadjack this thread, but Lorelei and Dragonfly were very special women. They both really touched my heart...as you have for years, Monnie. Yes, I miss them, too. And I am glad you are still posting after all these years and all the changes you have been through in life!

That's ok, I saw it only the day before and couldn't come anyway :( next time! But I will be a bit rubbish as I  don't own any diamonds yet!!! Blasphemy! I am waiting for my e-ring....if it ever comes... :naughty:

Another (former) Arabian owner too. :wavey: I grew up with the most beautiful purebreed Arab mare - Kehilan Afeena. Sadly once I grew up and moved away - my Mum gave  her away to another teenage girl to ride. Sharing the love I suppose but I do miss her a lot. I aim to once more own horses and ride again in the future but sadly military life doesnt lend itself to owning livestock...

Thanks, Deb. You're always so kind! I still post here because PS has been the constant in my life for so many years, while all the life changes have been happening. I'm glad you're still here, too!

Most of my neighbors own horses, they are beautiful animals. When it's Halloween some of the kids dress up like cowboys and ride their horses over its the cutest thing, we make to have apples for the horses. When my nieces & nephews come over they normally go over and practice horse riding with my neighbors. I could never own horses because I'm always taking trips between the US & Canada. Something about having horses around make my street seem peaceful & calm. I just love animals overall.

Thanks for posting that, himni! What a great portrayal of what it's like to live near horses.

I think that the animals love us just as much as we care for them.

My parents have horses, and I grew up with them my whole life. We always had between 15 and 25 (my dad bred, trained, and showed them, and my mom also loved riding and showing). They're older now so they haven't been breeding or riding much, but they still have several.

I'm a horse owner, one bay arab/appaloosa and one sorrel and white paint. Both are geldings and both are retired. The arab and I grew up together. He's somewhere over 30.

I generally don't read horse slaughter threads as people get quite emotional on both sides of the debate. My biggest complaint is over breeding. As long as it continues, there will continue to be more horses than "needed."

Horse owner here! 1 arab, 1 black and white paint, 1 rocky mountain / quarter and 1 appendix (thoroughbred quarter horse cross)!!
