Anyone mind looking around for a good Pear shaped diamond for me ?

Hey guys ! I've been spending sooo much time trying to look for a good GIA stone but to no avail :(

Would really appreciate it if anyone would link me in the right direction.

My requirements are :-

Shape : Pear (GIA Certified)
Carat : Above 1ct
Measurement : Ideally above 9mm in length
Ratio : 1.50 - 1.70
Color : D - G
Clarity : VS1 above as long as eyeclean
Polish/Symmetry : EX/EX
Fluorescence : None
Budget : USD 8500 (for stone only)

** I will be setting it in 18k rose gold halo 3/4 eternity band **


Preference (in order) :-

1. High brilliance, fire and sparkle
2. Measurement to maximize size
3. Minimal bowtie effect
4. Minimal mush

Selecting pears with L/W ratio over 1.5:1 makes the over 9mm length happen & this is easily done at BN. There are a few over 1.2 cts to look at. A smaller one caught my eye because of the apparently nice contrast all over the wide part:

The depth % is higher but not as seriously as it seems - this is a narrow stone and the depth % is calculated is calculated against the width - so a little lenience if OK.

Thanks for the search ! I'm really not looking for anything less than EX/EX in terms of polish and symmetry. Does the first stone look like it has a dark bowtie effect ? I quite like the look of the second stone but it's not excellent polish and symmetry :(

Hi Eri Anto...quick pear shape blub. Pears can not be bought by the numbers. They must be seen (images, in-person, up-close videos). Pears, in general, do not have good light return. My main goal when looking for a pear is to find the best light return I can within a nice pear shape. After that I take length and
other specs/things into account like Ex/Ex. Bottom line what I'm trying to get across is buying a pear is not like buying a round. You can not narrow yourself
down to things like Ex/Ex or table under 58, or other such requirements. It may cause you to throw out nice stones with nice light return and keep not such
great stones with not that great of light return.

I did a quick look on JA yesterday but didnt find one that made me say this is it. I did not look at numbers/ratios/polish/symmetry (like I said). You can look
through what I found. I tried to stay up by 9mm or close to.

Also, just wanted to mention that Bluenile is a also a good place to look but they do flood their stones with light so do take that into consideration.

What to look for...as the stone turns you want more nice facets to light up heading down towards the pointed end. The nicest stones look like
a round brilliant at the rounded end however these stones are usually shorter fat stones. In the stone below try to minimize the red area which
can tend to be mushy (doesnt return light well) and minimize the blue areas with nice light return. You need to watch the facets as the stone turns/
moves. Nice facets are clear/crisp and fairly well defined.

Neither VG nor Ex 'finish' grades do not say anything about what the stone looks like, only that neither polish nor symmetry characteristics (deviation from the facet pattern) are visible Differences are for graders; TMI...

You may well find a very beautiful pear with G-G (eg. polish downgraded for imperceptible surface graining, symmetry for an extra facet that does work...)

Even so, I do not expect to see the relevant details without a jeweler's loupe (instruments I hate to use) or a microscope (much kinder). Only old cut diamonds are something else (facet patterns out of the hat! - same place as genius)

Yes ! I go like the stone Swirl posted too :) the 1.13 ct stone.

What do you think of the ASET ? and bowtie visibility ?
 
The reason I like the @Swirl68 stone is because it has a very big region of well-defined facets. These facets will light up nicely as the stone moves.
Mush is minimal down near the point. This stone, IMO, does not have a bow-tie (all though the definition of a bow-tie is subjective). It has a lovely
pear shape and no shoulders. It also faces up pretty large at 9.23x5.87. It is X/X like you were looking for and of course color and clarity are not
questionable at D/IF. Also looks like a pretty good price at Yadav.

If I were interested in this stone, I would probably call Enchanted and find out if they price match. Look at all the benefits of each company and check
out their settings. Buy from whoever has the benefits/setting that match your needs.

Edit...dont tell either company the stone you are interested in until you are ready to put it on hold with
that company. Once its on hold the other company will not be able to get it until the initial company
has released it. Also, you need to do this in a relatively short period of time A) because it's a nice pear
and B) the stone can be snagged by anyone that is pear shopping on Pricescope (rare but does happen)

A D will face up white against any metal. It will be white from the side. If you want a very crisp, white color...a D is that.

Unfortunately, the link to the GIA certificate at Yadav is broken. I can't imagine Enchanted would price match without being able to match the certificate numbers. OP will probably have to get this from Yadav before approaching Enchanted, and this may take some time. It might be better to just buy from Yadav.

ETA- Enchanted also has a typo on the stats. info. they have entered on their site. They list the table as 58% but on the actual certificate, it says 57%. (same as Yadav)

Another nice stone I would consider above average. It is a little shallow but I dont think its being affected by its depth. You would need to get an
aset to do a better comparison between this and the 1.13...although an aset is a 1 time shot.

I still think the 1.13 has better light return but his new one is not as bottom heavy as the 1.13 and you may like that look better.

Any chance of ordering both and returning the one you dont like?

You might check Four Mine. They have this same stone listed as well and you could avoid the 30% restock fee if you return it. I believe they have 30 day free returns.

Call Lesley at BGD and ask her for "pairs for a pear" (LOL)
 
In your experience, which ring maker makes the most top quality custom setting within a reasonable price range ? I've found that James Allen etc doesn't have the best in terms of workmanship.
 
Sooooo I'm in the talks with Yadav and BG. BG found the stone on their national database but would not match Yadav's price of $ 8450. They offered $ 8700 and able to get it recertified from GIA for an additional $250.

I'm in a bit of a time crunch as I need the stone to be set overseas where I'm based. If I get it recertified it would take around 2 weeks. I would then need to get the stone to my country which will take a few days, and then send it to be set which will take a few weeks to a month.

My wedding is set for 30th March ! Am I cutting it too close ?

I've never heard of Yadav before but they do have good Yelp reviews. Who do you think is a more reliable option to go with to ensure that I can get the ring in time. The ring/stone is my dowry so I definitely can't have a dummy ring beforehand in case it doesn't come in time.

EDIT : BG Matched it !!!!! So I should definitely go with them right ?

Why do you want it recerted? Its cert is not that old. Are we talking the 1.13 or a different stone?

Tell Brian Gavin your timeline and see what they say. Definitely reliable. Do they have any settings you like?
 
Call Lesley at BGD and she will make it happen for you, that is for the diamond.
Ask her about the halo you want, as another poster said they should have a setting you will like and can do the complete job. Just call Lesley.
 
The 1.13ct is a June 2017 stone, to me that's quite old and a little suspicious as to why it's still circulating in the market having such great characteristics, especially in that price range.

BG did manage to match the price and I actually went forward with it with the understanding that there is a review/return period and the possibility for a recertification. However an hour later they emailed me saying that it is a final sale and that there will be no review period. And the vendor would not get it recertified either.

I'm thinking this is super dodgy as to why they don't want to get it recertified, especially when I have agreed to pay for the service. Either they know it's not going to come back the same as it was damaged sometime after the first certification, or it's a second hand stone? Either way it's quite dodgy.

Oddly enough I asked another local jeweler to check on the source of the stone, they mentioned that it's located in California and sold by a supplier he has never heard of before. That's still fine, but upon further enquiry, the supplier did not even include any information on the stone on the database (apparently something that all suppliers would usually put for vendors to see but not made available to public).

So I'm thinking due to the lack of information and the inability to return or get a recertification from GIA, it's too much of a risk, so it's back to square one for me :(
