I second what Pearlescence said. I would go for round Freshwater pearls with metallic luster.

PP have 3-4mma and 6-6.5mm akoya studs but I can't see anything closer to 5mm

I also think freshwater pearls are the way to go.

I saw some 5mm pearl studs in 14K from Honora at TJMaxx just this week. $30. Honora makes jewelry for young girls, so there are lots of choices in small mm sizes.

If you really want Akoya, look on ebay.

Amazon has 5mm freshwater studs in 14K for $28.

I already have 6-7 mm freshadama (which have a rather dull lustre and no metallic qualities at all), and 7-8 mm metallic freshwater. I'd like to try akoya's this time around and that size is perfect for work, where we have restrictions on earring size. I saw The Pearl Source has some in that size. Has anyone got any experience with them? I'll also try Hisano, but I did try PP some months back and was was fairly firmly shot down without a hint of "we'll see what we can do in the next buying trip".
