Down on vacation in the USVI, I saw an octogonally cut diamond that stole my breath away! MY LORD!

88 facets, and it's a brand new cut, I think that took two years to get patented...What a lovely lovely stone with so much fire. I have the brochure (of course!!!), but I can't find it anywhere on the web!!!

Anyone know more about it?

Was each of the 8 sides equal length or was it a cut cornered modified square? If it's the latter, it could be the soopa-doopa secret that Rhino is hiding.

Did you see prices and specs?

It was perfectly even octogonally shapped. The facets and corners of this stone were so perfectly done, even my cut snob FINACEE (sorry...that sounds funny) was impressed. The fire on this bad boy just threw me! I promise tonight to scan in the brochure, or at least the picture of the stone on the brochure, showing the picture....anyone sell these nationally besides the Carribean, Las Vegas and Key West???!!

Does this mean your ring is again in the making ?

Well my stone is sitting in e temp gold setting on my finger and will only be removed for the new setting to be made. I have yet to get some creative ideas from designers or find any willing to do the work with ideas, so I am going to try our jeweler who found our radiant. He has a ring that is almost identical to the look, but it is a three stone ring with a double band...

As for the 88 diamonds, if I could get an eternity ring with small 15 pointers all the way around, I would LOVE that, but it then it wouldn't match the RADIANT!!!

YAY!!! I got my ring

!!! Sorry...

Congratulations Nicrez!!
You must be so excited!!
Care to share any details on the proposal??

Nicrez!!

Congrats on your engagement!!

Don't hold out on us now dear, we love details, and oh yes, pictures, lots and lots of pictures! We don't care if it is in a temp setting or not!
love.gif
I need a Radiant pic fix!

As for the new cut you found, please post what you have on the details. Octagonal shape sounds incredible. I know how particular you are, so I know it must be spectacular!
appl.gif

Congrats again!

Hmmm Icelady...."Particular" sure is a nice way to put it...Honestly, as "particular" as I am Rand has done a phenomenal job at impressing me this time.

The whole trip he was as sweet as a lamb, just asking for my input, patiently waiting hours for me to perfect my "island look" before we headed two floors down for dinner...carrying every bag (including my big overstuffed straw bag I carried everywhere)...he let me gem shop for hours and not even a peep of irritation and rushing (he even made me try on a few others and gave me his opinions!!)...at one point I got scared and wondered if I had accidently switched boyfriends somewhere, or truly this island weather had some "island spices" in the breezes that drugged him!
2.gif

He even bought me the watch I have been wanting to get forever, but never quite committed to until the trip. They sell Movado watches SO cheap there, and retail it was at least double the price, and I was waivering. He got the best price, bargained it down and whipped out the credit card without even flinching! He was such a sweetie about it! Then as I wore it out of the store, he looked over at me with horror when I asked "hey what time is it?"

So it's pretty...but who says a watch should help you tell the time?

OK, so maybe I was having a blonde moment...
9.gif
but my watch was pretty...

Details will come in the show me the ring post, when I get my charger today and upload pictures after work. Tonight I will gush the thow story, but as for the 88 diamonds, they are REALLY unbelievable!

Honestly... I was staring for sometime while the drool just leaked. I would say this stone REALLY makes the Lucida run for it's money, BY FAR! These stones where set in a five stone ring at 30 points each, but without seeing a loose stone, I would venture to say they definately will outsparkle the Lucida (which is also octogonal)!!! Imagine...

Yeah, really - your leaving us a little anti-climatic. Details!!!

Agreed...does this mean I have to hang out all day waiting for the pics and details!?!?!

whoops...can't do that. Have to do someting productive, so will check back hourly

Awww...ladies, I WANT to post, but this camera battery thing threw me for a loop! I just couldn't find the charger before we left, and thought I would have NO pictures at all!!! While in town, we went to every camera store there...they were ALL out of my camer's battery charger (seems I wasn't the ONLY one with the problem), but one nice guy offered to charge it at the store charger for free (twice!), so I got pictures...

This morning I forgot that I STILL don't know where the damned thing is, so my pictures are being held captive in the camera until I can power up that battery and get them out! My precious babies!!! I took pictures of the hotel view, the place where he proposed (towards sundown, but there was enough light to fire up the ring!) and of course the lovely radiant I have obsessed over. Honestly, I went to every different light source around just to see it or photograph it! I think I am a bit nuts...

So I am waiting for the pictures to speak for themselves, so I can write the story with some graphic representation to aid the whole thing...

I am DYING to go home now, buy the charger and just upload until my little heart is burst open!!!

Uhh yeah it sounds funny. What's a finacee?

so Nicrez,

Early on in my PS surfing, I learned from AGBF (I think) that you are a fiancee, and Rand is your fiance. Now that you are one, you should know the difference!

Best wishes again...

Nic!!

Best wishes to you, and Congrats to Rand!

May you wear your ring, and your happiness in health and love!

Here's a copy of the significant page of the 88 Diamond brochure. I haven't seen it displayed or discussed anywhere...anyone have any further info?!

Sorry but what a load of marketing copy!

Old outdated cut for RB?

Limited Brilliance due to faceting? How exactly does just 'faceting' cause limited brilliance.

The 88 cut is certified...as if you can't certify a RB?

Hee Hee. Pretty stone though. The 88.

LOL... and that round that they used in the pic is dark (has low contrast). The 88 cut does look interesting. If I can find the manufacturer I'd like to do a more personal inspection.

just found the website: But nothing new than in the brochure...
http://www.88cut.com/home.htm interesting...

Mara, don't take their advertising personally, because everyone wants to compete with an RB, and these people just took the negative approach...or obviously have never seen RB's here on PriceScope! LOL

But I have to say, they truly are fiery and brilliant. Honestly, the stones I saw looked like excellent cuts and really sparkles with smaller sparkles, like I like, versus the RB's chunkier sparkles and facets...but that's taste preference.

She compared it to the G RBs in the same carat sizes, and they still out sparkled. Maybe they weren't optimally cut, but I hope Rhino can get his hands on one and test the heck out of it!!!

Sounds like a great vacation too.

Thanks for the info on the new cut. Looks very interesting. Hope the Pup gets his hands on one and tests it's brains out!! We wanna know if it's a Ford or a Caddy!! HeeeHeee!!

Speaking of cars,....... Did Rand get to keep the gloves like you promised, Nic???

Congrats on your ring Nicrez

The "88" cut should appeal to the Asian market. The only error on the website is that Monterey Park's area code is 626 not 818
2.gif
I mentioned this before in another thread but I saw a personlized license plate (which totally cracked me up) that read "888 TAM" and guess where I saw this plate??? ...yup... in Monterey Park, CA

It looks as if the 88 and the RB are different carat weights, as well as the contract being off. I think not having the H&A will hurt it? So it's safe to say the 88 is NOT the GOG secret square.

Thanks for the wellwishes! The 88 seems like it is mostly marketed in the Carribean for now, as that is the only place they can be purchased basically, and not sure what their future plans are. honestly, I thought this stone truly had an amazing fire and brilliance and I would love to see Rhino get one and run his battery of tests...all in favor say Aye!

"AYE!!!"

But it's definately NOT square, unless you put prongs on the side corners, like the Lucida maybe (also octogonal), but I would verture to say it's more like the Regent. i wonder if it have hearts or arrows at all....

I work for Diamonds International, the company that is exclusively marketing the diamond. In talking with one of our GIA certed managers he was telling me that the 88 cut while it is touted as a "new" cut actually is a varation on a old estate style cutting that hasn't been used in years

What else do you know about the stone...I think it's BEAUTIFUL and when I saw one in person, I literally had to hold onto my fiance...He can attest to that?

Do you know if they are going to extend sales to the diamond centers across the US or fine retailers in LA, NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, etc?

If the cut looks this nice on paper, it can't be too much worse carved in a brilliant crystal

I hope that taking the model from the 88cut.com is no wrongdoing, if so please ask to have this post removed. I am very curious about what old cut this could be inspired from... The one that seems alike to me is the 'double rose', but I would not call "estate" something that was all the rage three centuries ago!

the answer to all your questions is... www.88cut.com. read and enjoy!

Alextwersky, I am the person who found this gorgeous stone in the Carribean when vacationing in St. Thomas, and the Wyndham Sugar Bay store... I saw this site, but there is no new information on it. I assume you may work for the company that sells or markets the 88?

I am dying to know more about where you can buy it, other than the stores in the Carribean, Vegas, and Key West. Are there any NY retailers, on-line retailers? What are their marketing plans in the US? What will the price per carat me at the colorless, .50ct level? Any reatialers we can contact for more specific information or viewing the stones in person?

Thanks for any help!

hi nicrez!

i do work for the company that makes the 88 cut. i am in charge of its marketing. at the moment, it's only sold in the caribbean, but we will be rolling it out in select us markets this year. you can submit your email at www.88cut.com and we will contact you when it's available in the us. also, you can visit your favorite local retailer and tell them you want them to carry it. feel free to pass along my email to them so they can contact me... [email protected].

best,

alex

Is "patented and certified" copy code for "you will pay through the nose"?
