I''ve recently become interested in cushions and am wondering if anyone knows if the cushion cuts by Henri Daussi are the best cushions out there or if there is someplace else?

I think "the best cushions out there" question is somewhat loaded!

It really is a matter of personal preference with cushions.

The Daussi cut cushions will give you a really different look from most other cushions---is that good or bad??? I really think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)

That being said-I own a Daussi cushion ring and earrings---so my thoughts are that they are lovely

My advice, take a look at many cushions with different cutting styles and see what speaks to you!

Hmm..perhaps a better question might be HOW are the Daussi cut cushions different from other cushion cuts?

I don''t own one, but from my limited knowledge, the Dausi seems to be cut with a shallower depth, and a larger table, whereas other cushions that, say GOG carry/sell, are cut the opposite way (among other things). So the optics/performance are different. I''ll give you the link to two Dausi cushions, and a link to 5 GOG cushions. It''s not a totally level comparison, because I don''t know what lighting DBL used, though I can safely assume it''s not in a GIA Diamond Dock like GOG''s. But I would "assume" the lighting DBL used would be conducive to show what a diamond can do?

Scroll down just a bit for the video.

Same here.

And GOG''s video. He has other ones on his video page.

HTH!

Thank you Ellen!

I agree with stepcutnut- calling anything "the best" does not allow for peoples taste.
I love the modern cushions as well- I would not call either "better" as a rule- just different.

My view on this is Daussi is extremely good at using some very shallow rough diamonds to create a lovely cut design.
The shallow part is important- because the stones generally will look far larger than their carat weight.

They tend to have more in common with an Emerald Cut than a modern Cushion Brilliant, if you''re considering the sparkle.

We''ve had remarkably few come back for return/exchange - people seem to love them.

I quite recently bought a lovely Daussi cushion from Diamonds By Lauren to propose her with. She'd only seen pictures of it but already she's blown away...

I love cushions. But there really is no such thing as the 'best cushion' or best diamond for that matter cuz individual tastes differ. I chose the Daussi cushion for it's intriguing blend of step cuts and cushion faceting. Call it a cushion with an identity crisis if you will, but I love it! Here's a recent pic:

The best cushion is purely an opinion. Not to offend anyone .. I do not like Henri Daussi cushions but that is my personal opinion. I do love chunky cushions as well as square H&A though.

I tried on several Daussi cushions when looking for a cushion. I did like them. They do face up larger than their ct weight. The look a lot more like EC with extra faceting because of how their bottoms are cut.

Go try some on. See what you think of them and how they look on your hand. Don''t buy them just for the name though. What I mean is that sometimes designer rings just cost more.

That''s a whopper of a bowtie on that one. Is that typical of Daussi cuts or is the 1.03 just a really poor example of one?

Seems to be. Look at both links I gave up there. ^^

I really wouldn''t call that a bowtie .. cuz if you were to look at the cut profile, the ''bowtie shape'' corresponds to the way the Daussi cushion is cut. And unlike bowties.. it does not always look dark face up. I''ll post a few shots to illustrate. From a consumer perspective using a point and shoot camera, in broad daylight. No special lighting used.

With head shadow, like most diamonds it will show up darker in certain areas but as you can see from this one, showing some minor facet reflections, it is clearly not a bowtie.

Btw I thought with the photos already shown (esp in my linked thread), any 'experienced' PS-er would be able to tell if it is a bowtie or not but I suppose being a Daussi cushion owner gives me more RL experience with this cut.

I personally am not a fan...I think they look markedly different than a "normal" cushion-Daussi cushions are too busy for me.

I agree that as with any designer/niched styles, the cut may not suit everyone''s taste. Otherwise it would be called ''mass market''.

Do go look at and try on as many cushion styles incl. old mine cuts, and ALWAYS pick the one YOU love, not what others love.

The dark areas put me completely off regardless of what they''re called. What is important is that those who choose a Daussi cut are happy with their choice

Hey guys, I know this is in RT and not SMTR, but this is the ring with which DiamondFlame is proposing.

I agree it may not be for everyone, but I do think it's very lovely and I'm sure DF's fiancee will be thrilled!

ETA: The pear in my avatar has a pretty decent bowtie, but it has not diminished my enjoyment of it at all. But again, a personal preference...

It is head shadow but technically it isn't a bow tie.

A bow tie is a pavilion main reflection like the arrows of a RB.

What we have here is a large virtual facets showing head shadow.
This is the way patterns are formed in many step cuts also.

When it becomes a bad thing is when the angles are such that they stay dark to much of the time taking life out of the stone.
They would be considered to have contrast issues at that point.

Where that crossover point is from ok to bad will vary person to person.
My opinion is that at full arm length head shadow should be partial rather than full at most.
At 1/2 arm length full is ok as long as it flashes white with small movements.
If it takes a 10 degree twist to get a flash it has issues.

Thanks strm! Learn something new every day!

Thanks, Kitty. I like them in all shapes really, as long as they are well cut. Bow ties may be unavoidable for certain shapes, but personally I feel they don''t diiminish a diamond''s beauty the way bad inclusions do.

Thanks, Strm for that confirmation. PS taught me how to identify bowties. I''m glad I was able to use that bit of knowledge to suss out my first diamond.
I guess those who want maximum brightness can always pick a round brilliant or if that fails, a 100 watt light bulb, eh?

Treausure43-did you get a chance to look at a few different styles of cushions??? If so, did you find a favorite?
