Anyone have any information Birks and their certifications?

I was just wondering if anyone knows where Birks in Canada gets their certs for their diamonds? Do they just print them up themselves?

My father recently purchased a ring from Birks, and I just found this out. I wish he would have asked my advice, and I am doing my best to not hijack his occasion, but I don''t want him wasting 7-8k.

So he is going to show me the ring, and the cert today, but I dont think it is GIA.

I asked this question to Birks in Montreal regarding their diamond solitaire rings - if I recall correctly, they said they do their own appraisals and certifications in house.

Personally, I would never buy any major jewelry or stones from Birks - they are waaaay overpriced, and their service is so snotty!
