I talked to a guy today that had a very nice hammered silver wedding band. He said it stays shinny just by washing his hands. Any experience with silver?
I''ve always loved silver ... I can''t remember who said this, but some author/critic/person I love referred to silver as the most "human" metal: it ages visibly right alongside us. Now, the *degree* to which it ages ... that''s a highly individual issue. I have silver rings and earrings and necklaces that I''ve been wearing for over a decade that are in more or less the same condition now as they were then. My husband, on the other hand? Managed to tarnish the woven silver band I made him for an engagement ring completely black inside of maybe three months. All depends on your body chemistry ....
I have some silver; it sometimes bends easy so I rather have thicker pieces. I like it and to clean it I use sliver cleaner because it does tarnish a bit. I do think it is pretty and inexpensive compared to gold and platinum.
My husband wore a silver band for about 5 years. He finally bent it pretty bad when trying to open a beer bottle at a party, silly man. He loved it, and got more compliments on it than his new titanium ring and his fancy gold and diamond ring.
First, I would like to applaud you for considering a ring that is hand made and not mass produced like so many "unique" bands out there. Get something handmade to your liking because you are nto a mass produced individual.
Preaching done, ther are a few things you need to know about silver wedding bands.
-As previously mentioned, your body chemistry does take part. If you naturally secrete more acids then average, your bands will pit and tarnish at a much faster pace.
-silver is the whitest of precious metals (aside from sterling with platinum alloy- which might be something to look into; more durable, 6-8X more tarnish resistant).
-silver is softer then the other precious metals. it will scratch, bend and break much easier then WG or Plat. I would recommend a course satin finish. this way, you wont be as upset when it starts scratching in a week.
-Silver is MUCH CHEAPER! AG/oz- 16.19, AU/oz.-882.60, PT./Oz/- 1556.00
-I agree with the "human metal" part. Silver has a certain "beautiful vulnerability" which reminds me of my own mortality.
Good Luck.
