Hi Everyone,

Im fairly new here and wondering if anyone has had any experience enhancing the clarity of their diamond?
My ring was my grandmothers, it is a beautiful half carat F colour, although has very large black inclusions that are very visible.
(sorry for the bad photo)

I have heard laser drilling can damage or even break the stone, but a jeweller here in the UK has said they can boil it (I believe in acid) to remove the surface-reaching inclusions without damaging the diamond.

Has anyone had this done? what was your experience, I would also love to see before/after photos!

Thanks all!!!

I've never had it done nor wore a ring that had it done, but you can search "clarity enhancement" on this website hopefully get some help with this.

One thing I've consistently heard is that clarity enhancement treatments can really mess up the resale or upgrade value of the stone. I know this doesn't apply for you because of the sentiment involved, but I wanted you to know for any diamonds you'll have in the future.

Good luck!

The result is amazing and I definitely want to look further into it :-)

Yep. I've had it done a few times. You basically have 3 methods.

1. Boiling.
2. Laser drilling.
3. Filling.

On surface reaching inclusions sometimes a simple boiling is all it needs. If the inclusions do not reach the surface though it may require drilling so the boiling acid can reach and neautralize the black within the diamond.

Laser drillling is effective if the imperfections are actually black crystals as opposed to discolored feathering. From you pic though it looks more like discolored feathering.

Fillling is when you have eye visible feathers that they fill with what they call a "glass like" substance that makes them invisible or virtually invisible after treatment. I have specific video on this subject showing before/after side by side of the same diamond before and after enhancement if you search on my YT channel.

Another thing you can have done to your diamond now too is something called Fire Polish which does quite a job of increasing fire/sparkle in round brilliant cuts too. I've got video of that as well if you're interested in learning more but I'm not sure if they offer that over in the UK just yet.

Kind regards,
Rhino

Thanks Jonathan, I'm so glad you're an active member here, I have learned so much from you over the years!! So clarity enhancement isn't as "taboo" as some would lead you to believe huh? As long as the treatments are known between the customer and the jeweler, it seems like a viable option to improve the look of your stone. That's good to know.

I have a question about having the certifcation report updated: Once you have a stone's clarity enhanced, would you then send it back to GIA so that they could update the certification report to reflect the improved clarity grade? Would they mention the enhancement treatments on the report as well, or would the diamond be viewed as though it's the first time through, w/ no reference to its previous clarity grade (does that make sense  )?

Good Old Gold has some videos of enhanced diamonds...do a search of their videos

Knowing first what is clarity is more important click here to increase your knowledge about diamond clarity and the price range increase or decrease accordingly.....

If you're going to resurrect an old thread, at least give us an accurate link. GIA doesn't use the SI3 shown in that chart.
