Well my husband of 10 years and I have decided to upgrade the ole wedding ring. I have a particular jeweler who I have known for 15 some years and have a very good relationship with and he got a few stones in for us the other day to look at. The one that stuck out for us was an EGL certified stone (specs to follow) my only concern is, on the front plastic sheet the cert comes in was a "creditcard" for diamond inscription. I checked the girdle and no inscription and so did my jeweler, he then contacted his rep who said sometimes his stones from EGL Israel do not come laser inscribed. Does this sound right guys? I am a little weary on it, and let my jeweler know this, but he said if I took this ring to be appraised and it came in anything below what my cert says he would give me DOUBLE my money back. So, he sounds pretty confident right?

UGH,,,it's a HUGE purchase and any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

the cut advisor on this site says it's decent. I recently purchased an EGL Israel stone that I found to be quite beautiful and I'm happy and more importantly my Fiancee (ohh that has a nice ring to it) Loves it could barely get it off her hand to get it re-sized

Hi daboyzmami:

It does sound fishy, especially if the paperwork came with a laser inscription document.

?????"he then contacted his rep who said sometimes his stones from EGL Israel do not come laser inscribed"?????? That may be so but why was there paperwork?

There have been cases where the black ink in the laser inscription has been polished out during the setting process. This makes the inscription harder to see, but it should still be there, especially under high magnification.

Thanks for the replies. I am so torn. I only checked for the inscription with a 10x loupe, so not sure if we just missed it or not. The only thing that keeps me saying it will be ok is the fact that he is willing to back it up with the double my money back gaurantee. I can't see him making that offer if he really was trying to pull a fast one. But then again, I have been out of the industry for so many years now, I am lost. 15k for a stone is alot of change to throw around, and I want to make sure it's right. Thanks again. Anyone with any other advice I would greatly appreciate it.

If you make any sale contingent upon the diamond appraising out to your satisfaction with an independent appraiser, you can't lose.

Let me prepare you first though by saying that I have never once seen an EGL Israel graded stone whose grading I agreed with. The ones I've seen have (in my opinion) been consistently overgraded, sometimes in color, sometimes in clarity, sometimes both.

The scenario usually seems to be that the stone is priced correctly for what it really is, but represented as better on the EGL Israel cert. I have heard this same take from many different appraisers and dealers, it's not just from me.

Sorry. Still, if you like the stone, have it checked out. It could be that it's a great stone and worth the money, whatever grade it ends up being.

PS- The "double your money back" thing is just talk, and foolish talk at that.

Thanks Rich. I was also concerned with the EGL Israel report. We have decided to call our jeweler and ask him to send the stone out to GIA for grading. If it comes back with same specs then we will pay for it. If not, we will not pay for grading and will not be buying this stone. I will let you know what happens. Thanks.

Often a 10x loupe is not enough to read clearly a laser inscription, especially if the ink faded away.
I'd be much more worried about EGL Israel grades... Is the stone eye-clean? I wouldn't be surprised if it came back from GIA or HRD as an F/SI 2. Maybe this time EGL is right, but there are so many overgraded stones... This is why EGL Israel got such a bad reputation.
Offer him to pay for a GIA report. It is worth the peace of your mind.

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to say thank you so much to all who replied. We talked to our jeweler today and he is going to look into sending the stone to GIA to be re-certed. He is also going to get 5 more GIA certified stones in for me to look at. I am feeling better now. For the amount of money we are willing to spend (15K)on the stone alone I am sure we can find something quite nice. Thanks!

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY second that. That's a bluff statement; he hoping that you'll assume that if he's willing to do that, it MUST be okay.

If he's not bluffing, then he'll give that to you in writing....which he won't.

If you really like the stone, either negotiate to have your jeweler get an independent appraisal on it, or negotiate a generous return policy so you can do it yourself.

Good luck.

Hi daboyzmami:

Pleased you have decided to take things a little slower. Just a quick comment on the following:

"We talked to our jeweler today and he is going to look into sending the stone to GIA to be re-certed."

I can just about guarantee you that the stone will never make it to the GIA. Firstly, the GIA takes the better part of a month to certify a diamond, and most vendors do not want a stone tied up that long if it is already certified. Second, it is a well known fact that GIA grades more strictly than EGL. You can be 100% certain that the GIA will grade the diamond atleast one color or clarity grade lower than EGL.
