Any ideas on this ring

Brother in law gave to my wife. He bought it in California when he bid on a storage unit. Unit had mostly vintage looking clothes from the 1930's he believes. This ring was in a pocket. I believe it is silver. It says "STERLING" inside, but nothing else. This is a closeup of it. It is set on what looks like onyx. Anyhow, looks old. It is fairly worn. Someone told me they thought it was a fraternal ring. Any help would be appreciated.

Cool ring! Great vintage find. I would definitely wear that.
I would say 1930's. Probably is a fraternal ring, but may be impossible to identify. The lettering looks like jibberish, but maybe it's some sort of cryptic code.
