For an old mine brilliant, is it bad if the GIA cert reads "crown angles greater than 40 degrees"? I'm not sure how this affects the look/quality of the stone.

No on the contrary, you can't judge optics by a grading report but I would be more suspect if it didn't say that. Steep crown angles are representative of the vintage style and combined with the right pavilion lead to excellent light return.

I would agree. With older stones, you really have to see them in person to make a judgement as to how pleasing they are to your eye.

crown angles greater than 40 degrees is typical and is not a bad thing. have you seen the stone in person or do you have pictures/videos?
