Hello Rockys,
I wish to buy diamond for engagement ring. What surprised me was, not much
difference in price. I know there is lot more to diamonds than below.
But expected dealer to be much cheaper. Blue Nile also offered similar prices.

Q. Is it worth going thru Dealer for diamond. As you see my budget is
approx $1,400. Or would Mondera/Blue Nile be better.

Thanks for Help.

Dealer
A 0.50ct / H / VS1 round cut diamond can be offered at $ 1.405 USD.

Mondera
Round 0.51 H VS1 Premium GIA $1,422

there's more to that price tna weight, color and clarity... Assuming none of the two were worth some premium for cut, why not just go for the best price and service?

Today many vendors are working on 10% or less margins, so you will not see a lot of price difference between a manufacturer and an online vendor. What you did not bring into play however was the cut.

For all we can tell the $1,405 price could be horribly overpriced, or a tremendous bargain depending on the quality of the cut. Since there is about a 10% - 15% premium between a premium cut and a Hearts and Arrows cut then a H&A at 1,488 could blow both of those stones out of the water for value. Hard to say without knowing enough of the variables to make sure we are comparing apples to apples.

One thing for sure, if you keep looking and keep learning, you WILL get a great value on your stone.

Hi,
More info. on diamond from dealer.
certified IGI 0.5ct+/H/VS1 with 'Very Good' proportions, Good to Very
Good polish & symmetry, and nil to slight fluorescence.

For about $1,400 is it good value. Thanks.

What is "Very good" proportions on this last one ?

This must be annoying by no, I guess, but every seller and lab has yet another standard for cut - so one guy's "very good" is another's reject and the other way around! Interestingly, the words bring a premium (or a faster sale), no matter what they represent. there must be an explanation, though

It is not very straightforward to explain what I mean withou an example: here's one 1.48 F-VS2, AGS0, H&A (same $1400) with a pretty conclusive description of what the cut standard of the seller stands for... There are many other such pieces (F-H, 0.45-0.55cts, VS1-Vs2, AGS0, H&A that is) around here.

IGI is HUGE red flag. IGI is often one to two color and clarity grades off from GIA which throws your whole scenario into the trash bag. They have a HORRRIBLE reputation in the trade so definitely you should be looking at having this stone looked at by an independant appraiser which now makes it way more expensive than the Mondera stone.

I think you will find better deals right here on pricescope.
