I have always been drawn to the Marquise shape for a diamond. Until I,started reading here I did not realize all the nuance that goes along with that cut. I think I would eventually love to have this shape stone but am torn between searching for a modern version or a antique cut. What are the pros/cons of each? I think the more I look at older cuts the more I enjoy their personality and individualism but with this shape does that have more of an impact on appearance/performance? I look forward to your replies! Thanks

What is your budget?

What are you looking for?

Nice antique marquise are few and far between. Right now the nicest one I've ever seen is KILLING me on Grace's site. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I could. http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/loose-diamonds/1-ct-to-2-00/1-25ct-antique-marquise-cut-diamond-gia-h-vvs2#.V9zQ661n3IU

This one is nice too. It's more of a moval though: http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/loose-diamonds/1-ct-to-2-00/1-17ct-antique-marquise-cut-diamond-gia-e-si1#.V9zQ8K1n3IU

Short of an antique stone that can match those. You are better off sticking to modern ones. Why? Selection. There are a lot more out there, so the chances of you finding a good one are better.

It's all about getting the best cut, nicest stone for your budget.

Ok, so I am ruined. That Marquise from Grace is what has caught my eye and made me renew my interest. I was hoping no more than 5k but closer to 4K so,that stone is out of budget but is it good enough to stretch for in your opinion? Thanks

Lily, no expert myself, but you have come to the right place for help. Stick with the ps forum, and you will find your special stone. I think an antique pear would be lovely.

Old cuts can have big bowties and be harder to find.

But with your budget, im just going to leave this here.

Yes, if you can afford the stretch, go for it. Seriously it is that nice. And I get Dibs if you decide to sell it ever. LOL!

The first question that comes to me is, what styles of settings do you like? Sleek and modern? Traditional and classic? Antique?

I'd vote for antique stones if you prefer antique style rings. But if you prefer traditional or modern, I think a modern cut marquise is just fine.

I am obviously SO biased (this is mine, soon to be on my finger!: http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/loose-diamonds/2-01-to-3-00/2-44ct-antique-marquise-cut-diamond-gia-i-vs2#.V93hBzvYklY ) but FWIW I am voting antique MQ! I find the modern MQs wayyyy too splintery with all those facets. I also find that they are too evocative (right now, at least) of the 80s.

If you go modern, I would ho with a chubbier MQ. I find them way more charming. Just my 2 cents!

Okay officially green with envy.

I hope you post a ton of pictures when you get it! How are you setting it??
