Hi All,

I posted this link a few days ago:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2676726008&category=11020

I have since spoken to the vendor of this ring. Apparently it is exactly as it appears - OK, but a tad yellow. The cut is a transitional cut (between old European and Brilliant).

What do you suppose it is worth? Pounds Euros or Dollars valuation is fine!

I am no expert in these, but I would not expect to buy such a piece below 7k (USD) on Ebay or anywhere. In fact. I would need a good explanation if the price goes below this (for example, disturbing visible inclusions, a really weird, non-desirable cut or the sort). The seller's urgency to get cash is also a good excuse, if accompanied by some good proof that the merchandise is what it is. I would not be shocked to see a 2ct, K-SI2 ring for 1.5 as much retail (a 'modern cut, in some average mounting that is). This is all I know. All in all, I really like that setting and lower color grades in old cuts. This should be a ring with alot of personality.

Best of luck!

What does he mean by "transitional"? That table is awfully tiny - much closer to what I would call an OEC.

Also, keep in mind that since the cut is deeper on the old ones, the stone will not "appear" as large as a round brilliant.

That said, I like old cuts. My concern is purchasing from ebay w/o benefit of all the information.

I have a transitional cut from 1929. In my case, it means the top half is cut like a modern brilliant and the bottom half is more like an OEC. Looking at that picture, though, the top part looks like an OEC. Maybe the bottom part is more modern? Though it doesn't look it to me, just judging from the pictures. It looks like an OEC all over.

Whatever you want to call it, that stone is VERY deep. It weighs over 2 carats, but it's only 7 mm in diameter. That's more like how wide a modern 1.25 carat stone would be. Do you want to buy a 2 ct that looks like a 1.25 ct?

I have an OEC myself that's 1.65 carats. It's about 7.5 mm wide. It's also a K (well, the appraiser said K/L), also a good SI2 (the flaw is near the edge, so it can go under a prong). I love it. But it's obviously cut very differently than the one you're considering. It was appraised last year at $6000. (I don't know what Grandpa paid for it in 1921, when he gave it to Grandma.) It's smaller than the one you're considering, but looks a lot bigger because of its diameter.

Okay, the vendor had it on Ebay for £4500, and told me she'drop to £4k. I could probably buy it for less, but I am not sure that I could pass it on at a profit.

Hi,

I use the term transitional in my appraisals when I feel it isn't quite a round brilliant and not quite an Old European cut. From what I can see in the photos this looks much more like an OEC than a transistional stone. Cindy

Sounds nice! It is not all that easy to obtain a larger stone in these older cuts. There was one 'transitional' dimaond in a PS ring (here is one more. Of course, these can be closer to OEC or RBC, after all this is what transition is all about: so there is no really standard look for them. You are suposed to get a better-than-average OEC... and this aparently applies. It would look like a large diamond with an unusual cut, which is one nice prospect, I guess.. The lowest price I could find sunch a stone for was 6k (approx, due to conversion, maybe a bit less), so this sounds like a rushed, but still honest deal.
