Antique marquise cut ring: To buy or not?

I wandered into a pawn shop yesterday and saw this lil sweetie. It’s 0.4 pt marquise in a platinum setting with a mix of old European and single cuts.

I’m going back in tomorrow to take another look. Suggestions welcome on what to look for/ ask. It’d be my first marquise and I am surprised at how much I liked it. I have a Pavlovian drool when it comes to old cuts.

Asking $1k which is too much to me—but maybe not?

It has a long open culet and looks to be a high color. Pics suck and the ring needs a good scrubbing!

TIA

I love it! Does it fit you? Do they have a return period? Take your loupe with you so you can (hopefully) tell what's dirt and what's an inclusion or damage. Hand pics, please!!

Would love to see hand shots. I think it’s beautiful and rare!! Would love to know the mm north south. I think the price is good but pawn shops often will negotiate!

Great questions and advice! It does fit, which makes it even more appealing. Return period—hadn’t thought of that. Thank you.

I may take something to clean it too.

Ooh—thank you. I don’t know about marquise cuts. Will take some calipers too.

Handshots tomorrow.

I do plan on negotiating. Wish me luck!

I think it's very pretty. Hopefully you can get it cleaned up to see what is dirt and isn't. Please keep us posted.

I love it! It's beautiful! I wonder if the pawn shop would give it a quick clean for you lol! Looking forward to hand shots.

You guys!! I’m off to the shop. Will keep you posted. Thank you for the suggestions.

Well, I passed. The areas on either side of the bow tie looked like there were stirred clouds. It didn’t look “clean” even though the overall ring is lovely. There are a few carbon spots but that didn’t bother me.

They wouldn’t clean the ring because the cleaner wasn’t there? And I didn’t try bargaining because I was on the fence.

What do you see? Am I imagining the mess below the bow tie ie is this the way marquise diamonds look? Happy to receive education from you ladies.

I thought it looked quite included and it looks that way in these pictures too. Did you examine the underside of the ring?

I did but didn’t see anything that stood out. Oh well

I ended up going to another pawn shop and found some other OEC/ maybe transitionals? They were a bit too rich for me. The one in the ring with the trillions was estimated to be just over 1 carat and an H (I doubt the latter). He would take no less than $3k cash. The single stud was probably a 0.9 and was going for $2k.

My pocketbook is happy. A win?!

Those prices are not terrible.

I love both rings!

Good to know. I’ve been out of the hunt for a while. Maybe I need to increase the price in my mind . . .

I didn’t notice the inclusions before. Very unfortunately located. It is a beautiful ring. What fun!
