Antique amethyst.. what's going on with this stone?

It's a very pretty ring, but the stone has marks on it that I can't identify. Edwardian, so the amethyst is about 100 years old.

What are these marks? should I pass on this one?

Yeah, she has a whole lot of goodies going on in there. Amethyst is easy to find completely clean in larger sizes for very affordable prices. So I wouldn't bother here... I see fingerprint/liquid inclusions, veils, feathers, possible cavities, etc. There is a chance that some of what we're seeing could also be dirt on the underside of the gem, but I just wouldn't chance it.

thanks, Autumn. I like the setting and the color, but I'll keep looking. I think it's the stone itself and not dirt on the underside. it looks...pitted? damaged? whatever it is, it's not right.

If the seller has a return policy maybe.
Can you ask for more photos?
Can’t see any obvious facet wear so personally I think it’s filthy dirty. Amethyst rarely have inclusions. It could also be lab sapphire.
Also, you can’t always trust the age of the setting to determine the age of the gem as people often replace gemstones.

It is a pretty mounting! Hopefully you can find something you like just as much with a better stone.
