Antibody testing

I’m in line right now getting an IGM IGG blood test for pre admit surgery.

Thanks Austina! There is so much information/noninformation/misinformation on this. Ugh. Who knows what any of it really means -- if anything!

Whitewave, let us know how it comes out!

I will. They said 2 hours

My take from the article @deejay is that whilst it’s good to know if you’ve had it, and have antibodies, there’s not enough science to say whether it means much!

I think only time will tell if having antibodies is any kind of protection against future infection or even future transmission.

I’m double presumptive negative for antibodies and the virus.

It would be such a relief to test positive for anti-bodies right now, for me personally. I'm so fearful about my DH, so if we've already had it somehow, that would be good. I wouldn't change anything, but it would be good to know. Canada has no anti-body test yet.

I got the antibody test a week ago and just got results. It was negative. Where I live in California, anyone is able to get a test (either the swab for current COVID or antibody).

I know. I was kind of sad I don’t have antibodies in the way that you refer to it.

@lovedogs

I'm just wondering whether you were sick with the symptoms of Covid-19 anytime since January that made you think you might have had it ? And if so when?

Asking because I got sick end of January with a bug that felt much like the description of covid 19 but nobody was talking about it being in our county at that time. I live in the Greater Bay Area but actually closer to Sacramento than to SF.

Just jumping in to say your avatar made me smile, thank you.

I had one done Monday. After a cruise late February, I had a nasty case of bronchitis/flu/fatigue. My cruise companions had flu-like symptoms too. My cabin mate said she had a loss of sense of smell.

They ran the antibody tests during routine bloodwork.

SARS-CoV-2 IgG (COVID-19)Not DetectedNot Detected
SARS-CoV-2 IgM (COVID-19)Not DetectedNot Detected

Negative for antibodies. Glad I tested. Now I can move forward and not wonder.

I was very sick in Feb, but didnt have symptoms of COVID. But I work on a university campus and see kids in clinic so thought I might have had it. I'm sad to not have the antibodies. I really wanted to donate plasma :(

Hey kids -- reporting in on my test today.

These folks have it down to a science (no pun intended). I drove into a parking lot and took a slot. Someone came over and asked for my name and the time of my appointment. I handed over my ID and insurance card, which was checked against the info that had already been provided online. A PA came over and took my temperature and asked a slew of questions. Only then did I get out of my car and go into the lab where I was walked straight into a room with a phlebotomist who verified the info again, took my blood, and sent me on my way. They said my results will be posted online in 2-7 days.

The whole process was incredibly efficient.

So now the waiting begins...

DS went for a test on Wednesday (the more accurate one) a nurse in full PPE took his blood, no one else at the facility, and he got his result yesterday. He’s negative for antibodies, so he hasn’t had CV.

Results are in... also negative. Ugh. Was SO hoping I'd had it! Oh well, at least I've got the whole cleaning thing down to a science at this point...

Dang! I hope I've had it, but I bet not. We still don't have these tests in Canada.

I had the Abbott antibody test, and mine’s come back negative too.

I also tested negative on the abbot antibody test. It's weird because I was very sick for 3 weeks in late March. Fever, fatigue, shortness breath, the whole nine yards.

I guess it's possible that it was just a flu strain but I've never gotten that sick from the flu.

Tested by my PCM a week ago: COVID-19 IgG = Neg

Not surprising (to me), not a single patient they had tested so far had a positive result.

The New York Time wrote an article 4 days ago that stated if you have an antibody test that is 90% accurate, it can give a false positive 70% of the time. Why wouldn’t this also be true for false negatives?

I think they need to perfect antibody testing before giving inaccurate results.

A friend of mine who went skiining in the Austrian hotspot right when this became a big deal and who came home sick but was never tested for covid had an antibody test and it came back positive on Friday. So I guess SOMEONE is getting a positive...

Housecat, my rudimentary understanding is that the false positives can be generated by antibodies to other coronaviruses, so if you had something else and developed antibodies that could trigger a positive. But nothing = nothing.

DH and I both tested negative using the Abbott assay blood test.

Either they have a serious issue with false negatives, antibodies appear/disappear at odd intervals so can only say if you had it X far before testing, or there is another nasty virus going around at the same time.

We both got very sick. DH is still having issues bad enough to be out of work. Tested negative for all flu strains they check for plus the 2 negative COVID-19 tests and now this. It isn't in his head. Symptoms are right down the line for COVID-19. Something isn't testing right!
