This delicate platinum star ruby ring was made by the Newark, N.J. jewelry manufacturer F&F Felger. They were a well-regarded firm that supplied jewelry to retailers like Cartier, Tiffany, and J.E. Caldwell. This was one of their popular settings--I've seen it with other star rubies, star sapphires, and faceted stones. I'm guessing it's from the 1930s-40s.
Mine was listed on ebay as a cabochon ruby, but I suspected it might turn out to be a star. Indeed it is--a nice, clean, well-centered one. The ruby a modest size, about 2 1/4 carats by my measurements. It's an even color, nicely translucent, and intensely fluorescent.

Indoor daylight, with my 9ct 1942 star sapphire ring:

Two kinds of fluorescence:

Side view, nice and deep:

A few weeks ago I bought a similar star ruby ring. That one is Japanese, a little later (I think), with a taller, more elaborate setting. The Japanese star ruby is less silky, maybe a touch more intensely colored, much more included (with some fractures), and with a weaker star that's off center. It faces up bigger than this new one but is probably a similar weight, since the new one is taller. They're similar enough that I don't neeeeeeed both of them, but what can I say? I am a dragon with a hoard.
The Japanese ring is on my pinky in this picture:

I've seen other Felger star ruby rings with this setting that tested as unheated Burmese. I'm wondering whether I should have this tested. I'm planning to keep it, so it would only be for my own information. What would you do?
