I've seen the B&N Nook Color, which is Android-based and looks pretty nice for $250, but its version of Android is watered down, since it's mainly an e-book reader.
I keep hearing the Samsung Galaxy Tab is great, but it's around $600, which doesn't help you at all.
I've heard some good things about the Archos 70 and Archos 101 (the 70 has a 7-inch screen, which I prefer over the 10-inch screens of the 101 and iPad):

Kinda cool that it has a webcam, a kickstand, and Android 2.2. The odd thing is that it doesn't come pre-loaded with Google apps (the market, maps, etc.), but there's apparently a very easy workaround that won't end up voiding your warranty or anything.

I got it mostly for reading, music, games, and occasional web browsing, but I am loving all the apps I can put on it. I agree with you that the Android OS is fantastic. This was my first exposure to it, and it's so intuitive and easy to use. I get my phone through my job and we don't have Android phones, but if I ever have a chance to switch to one, I am definitely going to get one!
I did not get it with a wireless package through Verizon or Sprint. I use the WiFi only, and it seems to work well. I find it to be pretty quick.
I found a sweet leather case with a stand for about $25, so I can throw it in my purse and take it anywhere now. The Kindle app is great, and I find myself reading constantly now that I can bring it with me.
I know it is outside the price range you were looking for, but I personally think it's worth the splurge. I was looking at an iPad, but I found it too big and too heavy for what I wanted. I opted against a Kindle, because I wanted more options to play with, and the Tab give me that.
I will say that depending on the website, sometimes you need to do a lot of zooming in to get the text the right size to read, though most of the time using the Tab in landscape view vs. portrait view solves that issue.

Please keep posting. The Galaxy is out of my price point.

Short of e-mailing, it is good for going online, music, and photos. Reading is okay, but not the best. This is where the Archos might have the edge. I read on my iPhone all the time with fairly poor eyesight, but, then, I rarely type or e-mail on it because it is more of a hassle than just getting my laptop out. You can probably find a used Touch one on CL or ebay cheap. There are just incredibly more and better apps for iGoods compared to other machines.
I have seen the Galaxy and the HP Slate 500. Both are really slick, but as pricey as an iPad. And, honestly, the iPad is better just because it has such an edge on the apps market. I haven't seen the Nook color. Hopefully someone with one will weigh in. I know there was a busy thread about it here when they were announced. Someone has to have bought one.
