I was just innocently fulfilling my eye candy quota when...

I saw something in a super ideal stone that looked like the carbon spots were being reflected throughout the whole diamond. I thought I was about to lose my lunch- literally. As much as I thought I disliked "crushed ice" and fluorescence, they have never actually caused a gag reflex I could feel upon seeing the diamond. Apparently it really shook me up because I''m still perturbed by it hours later. I guess I''m just insane.

Thankfully we all have varied tastes and there are different tastes to keep vendors'' families fed. I mean no offense to anyone in the making of this thread. I''m just lucky I found this site and figured out what I liked.

And the real reason I posted it is I want to know...
What is it that makes you want to gag when you''re looking at a diamond?

Not insane! No, never.

Diamond obsessed along with the rest of us? YES!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said we all have varied tastes. Otherwise we would all be after the same diamonds!! I personally would go stark raving mad if I could see a black inclusion in a stone, but I have heard others say that they like the inclusion to be distinctive so they can readily their stone. Also that it adds to the unique nature of the stone. So yes, each to their own.

Off to obsess now!!

Fisheye makes me want to gag! It really looks like a dead fishes eye to me and I just cant imagine why anyone would buy a
stone that looked like that.

I hate heavily included diamonds myself. I just cannot get over large or numerous inclusions no matter how hard I try.

I too hate the fish eye look. I don''t always need an ideal cut, but a fish eye is just yuck to me.

Certain patterns in a diamond are bad for me as well. H&A rounds or any type of square shape that has a prominant X in the center really turn me off. Yes I said I dislike H&A rounds. The contrast patterns are just too much for me to enjoy. I like older types of RB though.

I don''t like black spots of any kind, whether large ugly ones or lots of little black pepper specks. I don''t even like black spots that you can''t see with your naked eye, but that jump out at you under a loupe.

I don''t like GRAY diamonds. You know, when they get very low color but its not ''warm''--it''s an ugly dull grey.

I don''t like diamonds that are cloudy, milky and dull and just don''t sparkle.

I don''t mind small ugly diamonds half so much as I mind BIG ugly diamonds. and for some reason, it seems like a lot of the people I know that have reallybig diamonds (by big, I mean over 1.5 carat) have ugly, dull, cloudy, included garbagey looking diamonds. Usually marquise cut, for some reason. I like marquise cut, but not these things. something I don''t understand is how much entirely ugly diamonds, if large, are admired everywhere except on pricescope. I often see a group of women gushing over someone''s diamond and come up to look and it is large, but ugly (to me). the owners of these pebbles are very proud, too.

Oh, well. To each their own.

I hate the X thing in the middle, too. But I''ve seen that more in CZs than in diamonds.

And, while I have some H&A diamonds myself and like them, I don''t ''get'' this thing on P''scope where H&A are recommended as so superior to all other types of RBs. I guess it is just the current style--people right now are very much into symmetry. H&A makes a round diamond seem more like a square, especially if put into s four-prong setting. But it seems like a matter of taste and I have an older RB that is not an H&A and it sparkles like crazy anyway and is very pretty.

Again, to each their own.

The diamonds that are meant as show-off diamonds, and are large, but have no life at all.

You are so right. To each their own! I don''t think people are wrong for disliking that much symmetry, but I would rather a round that isn''t ideal everything to get away from that type of look. Then again I am not so fond of rounds to begin with.

I''ve seen even small X in the center of a lot of princess diamonds and quite a few of the modified brilliant cushions. If I can see a definite X I am immediately turned away. It makes it hard for my DH to find a piece for me because of my pickiness.

I am very big on patterns (or lack there of) in some stones. I would rather see sparkles than a solid pattern. The exception to that is in asscher cuts. I love them and I have no idea why I like the patterning of those so much and dislike it in others. I figure I am just an odd ball

Honestly? I don't like marquise cut. I've never seen one I liked, ever. Also, heart shapes. They just seem so cutesy and little girlish. I can't imagine having one of those on my ring finger for years and years.

I love all other diamond shapes, especially round, asscher and emerald. Funny that I don't like marquise but I like pear sometimes.

The ring of death...

I honestly feel sick and nauseated when i see such a stone, i''m not kidding
32.gif
32.gif
32.gif
. Once a friend got engaged and unfortunately she received such a diamond. She was a diamond ignorant and she hadn''t even realized that there was something wrong with the stone... She came in my office to show off the ring and tell me all about the engagement right at the moment that i was enjoying my mother''s delicious, home made greek cheese pie
18.gif
The moment she showed me the ring i felt that i''ll vomit...I was sick to my stomach and i couldn''t say a word...It took me a few moments to say something like: "That''s very nice, congratulations...". Damn...I HATE the ring of death...
38.gif

what''s the ring of death? I think I get this from my wife because she has such insane sight she can see inclusions naked-eye on SI diamonds, but it would be cloudy diamonds. SI1 can be OK, but SI2, might as well just get a new cz every 6 months, it would sparkle more. I think color can be anything, even K, but once its cloudy, it doesn''t look like a diamond anymore.

agreed, fisheye is much, much worse. it's aptly named.

I don''t like inclusions and usually don''t like heart or marquise shaped stones - but I have found (since Pricescope) that I don''t dislike all heart or marquise - some of them are wonderful :)

And since Kswanson was wondering what is the ring of death, i attach a picture of it...

Yes, I would die a little death if I saw a ring like that in person too!

I just don't like "dead" diamonds. As someone else pointed out...the ones that are all show and no real substance. And I cringe at a bad, sloppy cut that just does NOTHING for the stone. And I feel bad for the poor naive guy or girl who probably got swindled out several thousand dollars at a maul store to buy it.

I don't like hearts either. Too cutesy and sticky-sweet (I get a toothache). I like marquise if they are set E-W only.

To clarify I did not mean that particular ring. I was referring to the "ring of death" phenomena that was being described and not that particular ring. My apologies if I offended anyone.

Good advice, MC; although in this case, I believe the photo Naty posted is of one of her own rings.

Edited out of confusion.

Yeah, I know it belongs to Naty. That''s why I posted my comment. I just didn''t want her feelings to be hurt. Maybe she''s fine about the comments since she did post a photo. Who knows!

That looks like a small stone in an illusion setting. Meaning, it''s probably the best the couple could afford. I think it''s pretty mean to pick on it.

Getting a sizeable stone, near colorless, ideal cut and eyeclean is simply not affordable for many couples. Something has to give.
Yeah, as stated, the ring belongs (or belonged) to the woman who posted. She posted a frown after her comment. . .I wasn''t sure what her thoughts on comments would be.

Bowties. I can''t STAND bowties in ovals, radiants, marquise, and pears. Also, that circular crushed ice look in radiants.

Edited again! I think Naty posted her daughter's ring, which is not an ideal cut, but sheesh, if I were lucky enough to have a 25 point diamond as a kid, I hardly think the cut would matter!

Well then I specifically apologize to you Naty if I offended you with my comment, it was not my intention to actually specifically call out your ring...just comment on the "ring of death" in general though of course that also relates to the ring you posted.

So....I am sorry to you or anyone else I offended with my insensitivity.

I dislike diamonds which have been cut for weight rather than beauty... but more than that, I dislike pretentious people who wear large diamonds as a way of flaunting their wealth and who do so in such as way as to demean other people...

Case in point, a few years ago, we were sitting in a theater and a young lady was turning her hand about in awe of all the sparkle which was being cast about by a diamond which was about a quarter carat in weight, it seemed obvious to me that she was just recently engaged. At one point she notices the woman next to her watching her with amusement and she says "I just got engaged. You have a very pretty diamond, how big is it?" and the woman reaches out and grabs the girls wrist diamond hand over the girls diamond hand and smugly remarks "yes, your diamond is ''cute'' but mine is a carat" in this real condescending "you are lower than me" kind of tone that caused a crushed look to cast over the young ladies face. No worries, this was resolved easily by leaning in and saying "her diamond may be larger, but yours is much better cut - which is why your diamond is so much prettier and more lively than hers... see how your diamond is exhibiting all of that brilliance and fire? See how hers isn''t? I''d much rather have your diamond and I''m in the business!" You know, the older lady got pretty quiet after that and the newly engaged bride looked quite pleased and went back to watching her diamond flash about under the theater lights

You''re like a diamond super hero!

Just for clarification, I am referring to the dreaded dead, lifeless bowties that some of those cuts have. I have seen some amazing ovals and marquise that were so well cut that the bowties even sparkled...that doesn''t bother me. It''s when there''s literally a dark bowtie smack-dab in the middle of the stone.

And as for radiants, there are SO many facet patterns for radiants it''s not even funny! It''s the ones that actually look like a shattered mirror with a swirling circular crushed ice look that I do not like. My first diamond was a gorgeous radiant cut, so I''m rather fond of those.
