I got a nice juicy Amazon.com gift certificate for Christmas, and now need to spend it!

I think I''d like to buy a great gem book to add to my library. I already have a few...Richard Wise''s book, the Smithsonian gem collection, some books on antique jewelry...

What about Joel Arem''s Encyclopedia of Gemstones...any thoughts?

What''s your all-time favorite gem book?

Thanks!

PS: Great pictures/eyecandy a must...

Is Arem''s "Encyclopedia" still in print? I paid a small fortune for a used copy some years ago.

There are lots of good books but selecting one depends on what your specialized interests are. That Arem book is very helpful to people learning gemology because it provides lots of detailed gemstone property/occurrence information. Even so it''s a bit out of date and the illustrations could be lots better.

An all-around handy reference with lots of pictures and general gem data is Schumann''s "Gemstones of the World." Again, it''s somewhat dated and contains quite a few errors but is still a very handy reference.

You might do some browsing at the GIA Bookstore site and select titles of interest for purchase with your gift. The site is Here
