Glad to hear it''s getting fixed! Hey, since you are near Quest, are you going to the gem show in August?

Talked to Pete. He was as shocked as we were. Said that in order to tighten the stone, they have to apply pressure at the milgrain area, and the jeweler failed to put the milgrain back on. Of course he is taking the ring back and will make it all better again

Very accomodating as always.

Thanks everyone for looking and helping me solve the mystery.
So is that a normal procedure? To have milgrain taken off? Or...'pressed away' or whatever happened? That seems so strange to me, but I am NOT a ring expert (or even little knowledged), so....

HUZZAH!

I wish I could, I go every year. But we are leaving for a week to the beach on Saturday of the show and Friday I will be so busy at work I doubt I will get down there. Will you go? I should have you pick me up some funky stacking rings, I always enjoy your posts and pics about your beautiful stacking rings!!

I still don''t see how "applying pressure" to tighten the prongs would take the milgrain off and leave a polished bezel!

Glad they are fixing this for you. LOVELY ring!!

Yeah - that is my question, too. Milgrain was taken off on purpose?? And, supposed to be put back on but wasn''t?? Didn''t know that was standard procedure...interesting...

Glad to hear it is getting fixed!!

It happens, even with really excellent jewelers. I had some engraving added to a ring by Greenlake Jewelers, and they accidentally polished off a portion of the original milgrain on the outer edge of the halo- about a three mm section. I didn''t care enough to have them fix it. But, especially with super fine, well done milgrain, it does wear easy.

Most of the antique rings I see at work have a lot of their original milgrain gone. It''s very, very rare to see an actual antique ring with much milgrain left- I''d say most have 20% to 50% of the original milgrain left intact, or just hints here and there that it once had it.

For a bezel set stone to be tightened, I bet it is pretty hard to not polish the milgrain off. Weird that they didn''t know they were doing it though! Glad they''re making it right. It''s a gorgeous ring!

I didn''t know that it was normal to polish off the miligrain and then add it back! Interesting.

Hi

you have a very beautiful ring. thanks for sharing.

Hmmm, sounds wierd. Have you louped the stone to make sure it''s your''s?

My initial paranoia says the stone got switched. BUT perhaps someone was absent minded enough to be using a steel wool scouring pad to polish the bezel.
Milgrain will wear out over time, though I don''t think 2 years is long enough to show that level of ''isolated'' wear.

I trust Quest 100% and do not believe they would ever switch the stone, much less happen to have an exact 2.02 oval on hand to perfectly fit the handmade setting that they personally made. Especially since I came in on a whim and it wasn''t an appointment. I absolutely believe what Pete told me about putting pressure on the bezel and forgetting to put the milgrain back on.

The milgrain on my Tacori wedding band completely disappeared within a year, so I''m not completely surprised.

So glad yours is getting fixed quickly!!! Your ring is lovely.

Quest is pretty highly regarded, and the polishing issue is pretty common when it comes to platinum: you don''t need anything as crude as steel wool to make the milgrain go away, just a tiny bit of pressure. Platinum is v. ductile, so great for polishing out scratches ... just, also, great for polishing out other things, like engraving, milgrain, etc.

MM, can''t wait to see your restored ring!
