So I have the wonderful pleasure of living near Quest and on Saturday I took my ring in to get inspected, cleaned, etc..
Ever since then, I have been staring at it, thinking something just wan''t quite right. When I looked down on it, the bezel around the stone looked sorta dark and not right. So I pulled up the original pictures of my ring and it seems the milgrain around the inside bezel has disappeared

Is that even possible?? Can cleaning the ring "polish off" the milgrain. Check out the pics. This one is my original pic, and the second one is from today. Have I completely lost my mind?

Here it is today after a thorough (maybe too thorough) cleaning.

No, you have not lost your mind - the milgrain is polished away. Normal cleaning should not do that, and honestly I wouldn't think daily wear and tear would, either... one possibility, are you wearing it to bed? Maybe it's rubbing against the sheets at night? Still, that would be extreme.

How are you cleaning it?

What metal is your ring? Some people complain about issues with milgrain on platinum, since it's softer/more malleable it disappears more quickly. How long have you had the ring?

ETA: Have you had any sort of work done with it, like getting the prongs tightened on the pave or anything like that?

Whoa!! That''s a huge difference.

I don''t know how that all could have happened with a mere cleaning and polish.... I''d be taking it back and showing it to them.

Ditto, meant to ask that. Though it would take a loooong time to wear all that off, and I'd think you would still see SOME on the inner rim.... (more than you can)

You are definitely not insane!! I''m with Ellen, bring it back, with pictures, to show them!

I have had the ring almost exactly two years. I never wear it to bed or shower in it or anything like that. Just throughout the normal day. It was absolutely normal before Saturday''s cleaning. I would have definitely noticed something before then. It''s platinum by the way. I sent the pics to Pete, maybe he will have some insight.

Musey, that is exactly what i had done Saturday. I took it in to have it inspected, prongs tightened, cleaned, etc. They did all that.

Okay, my guess is that they also polished it in some way. It's not a big deal, they can just add the milgrain back in... but that's what happened, I bet.

That they can. Pete gave my heirloom ring a new miligrain edge, and did an outstanding job, so no worries there.

I still can''t believe this though, I just think it shouldn''t have happened in the first place. *scratches head*

Add me to the scratching their head. Ummm. that''s just weird, haven''t seen anything like this before. No worries, they can put it back, but sheesh??

yep- its no longer there, you have not lost your mind. Goodness

Thanks everyone. I just knew something wasn''t right. Never seen anything like it either. It''s amazing how a little milgrain (or lack thereof) can really really change the look of something.

the milgrain is definitely NOT there.

maybe the experts here would be able to give a knowledgeable answer? i''m not a fan of milgrain... yet... so it''s nice to know if that''s one feature of the milgrain that needs to be considered when purchasing a ring.

Huh, the milgrain IS gone! I would take it back.

+1! i''ve never seen anything like this before either, but good for you for noticing it!

Whoa- someone went nuts with the polishing!
At least you have before and after pics, but that''s crazy!

Yep, can certainly happen. My DH had his ring polished and they also polished away etching and miligrain, which was an integral part of the design. they had to redo the etching and just polished the bits that needed polishing, needless to say we have never gone back there for repair work or anything, it was a simple job that was muddeld up.

Yeah it''s gone.
and sheeeeeeeeeesh you have a pretty ring

I just wanted to comment its a beautiful ring with or without the milgrain!...but I would take it back
and get it re-done!

D''oh! How on earth.... definitely not there, you''re not crazy. Dang. Like others have said, they can put it back, but jeez.
19.gif

wow I didn't think that was possible? You aren't insane...because I see it too!

do you think it's something they did during the inspection and cleaning?

What I think is really weird is that they didn''t notice what they did. Definitely go back. You''re lucky that you live near them.

wow, i can''t believe that happened after a routine cleaning and i''m assuming polishing, i hope you were able to bring it back and get fixed

Talked to Pete. He was as shocked as we were. Said that in order to tighten the stone, they have to apply pressure at the milgrain area, and the jeweler failed to put the milgrain back on. Of course he is taking the ring back and will make it all better again

Very accomodating as always.

Thanks everyone for looking and helping me solve the mystery.

oh that''s great that they can fix it to good as new

Oh that''s good to hear! whew!

Glad to hear it''s being fixed.

glad Quest will fix it. they will do a great job and make it as good as new.

Good to hear that it''s getting fixed!
