Am I being too nitpicky?

So I recently had my ering reset, and while the results look great, there's something about the new setting that is bothering me. The original stock setting had a very small angle split shank that curved up and out, which I loved. However, the one that I ended up with (made by same designer to fit my stone and finger size) is more straight and long. If you count the number of side diamonds on mine, you can see that there are 6 before it joins in to a single band, while the stock setting has only 3. I've emailed my jeweler about this, and am waiting to hear back. Do you guys think it's something that I should pursue, or am I being too detail oriented and nitpicky? :((

I see what you are talking about and definitely feel like you are justified in feeling disappointed. I would contact the jeweler you worked with about your concerns.
 
I don't think you're being too picky at all - there's a noticeable difference between the two shanks, and you should have the one you prefer. I would definitely pursue this with your jeweler.

I don't think you're being picky either, the 2 rings have a completely different look. I would also talk to the jeweler. I hope they are responsive and do what it takes for your ring to be the same as the elegantly curved stock ring. Sending positive thoughts, hope the remake goes smoothly.
 
I can see the difference, too. The stock piece has a more graceful curve toward the stone whereas your piece seems to have straight sides that form a triangle. I'd ask them to try again. Hope you can get it worked out -- very pretty ring! =)
 
they are definitely different. I wouldn't say that one was better than the other tho.

But you should get exactly what you want and what you expected. Any good jeweler will understand that.
 
I think your ring is beautiful but I can definitely see the difference between the 2 and I don't think you're being too nitpicky. You're the one who has to be happy with it!
 
I see what you're talking about and think it changes the overall look of the ring. So, not too nitpicky at all.
 
The difference is very easy to see.

However, what was the size of the stock piece? I'm wondering if your center stone was considerably bigger and your ring size considerably larger if it would effect the size of the angle while keeping the width of the splits the same?

Have you spoken with the vendor?

I think you need to ask the vendor why this design choice was made. It could be a function of a different finger sixe or diamond size. Estetically, while you think that the same design as in the stock image should work with your stone and finger size, it may not!

For what it's worth, though, I like you finished ring *much* more than the stock image ;)) And no, I am not just saying that. The split shank is much more graceful with the larger and longer opening.
 
not too nitpicky at all. mechanically it may be a minor-ish change, however aesthetically it takes on a very different look. i also wondered if diamond size and/or finger size affected the outcome. even if that is the case, i think they ought to have discussed that with you so that you would know what to expect and wether you still wanted it with the 'new look'.
 
Thanks for all the input everyone! The stock setting is actually the exact ring that I ordered, except customized to fit my stone (smaller) and finger size (smaller). A few of you did bring up a good point, that the changes might have been made due to construction issues. However, I feel that I should have been notified if the designer was not able to produce the exact setting I thought I was getting. I've contacted the jeweler, who is waiting to hear back from the designer. Hopefully, they can fix it without too much trouble. Do you think they'll end up having to recast the whole thing? I've already waited 4 wks to get the first setting...

Do you guys like the original curved shank of the stock setting or the one that I ended up with?
 
I would've thought they'd need to make a new casting. The only other option would be to bend the two straight arms to make them more curved, but that just doesn't sound right to me. (Obviously I have zero knowledge on this kind of thing!)

I'm surprised that your stone is smaller -- I fully expected you to say it was larger than the stock piece and that would've made more sense to me as they might've then had to widen the gap between the arms to accommodate a larger stone. Since it's a smaller stone, I can't see why they would need to make the gap between the arms so wide. :confused:

Since you asked, I prefer the stock piece. I find the smaller gap and the way the arms curve up to support the head much more aesthetically pleasing. The stock piece looks more antiquey and classic to me, whereas the new piece looks more modern.

Like everyone else has said, your not being too nitpicky! That's a pretty substantial design change. I agree with you in thinking that if the design of a ring needs to be changed in ANYWAY to accommodate finger or stone size, then that information should be disclosed to the customer BEFORE the work order is placed. I''m interested in hearing how it all works out. Good Luck!
 
since you asked, i prefer the original, stock piece. can't pinpoint why exactly, but i do find that my eye is drawn to the center on that one vs. my eye being drawn to the gap between the splits on the version you were given. good luck with everything, i hope it works out and your jeweler & the designer are able to make you happy!!
 
FInally heard back from the jewelery store today. The designer (who works for the store) said that since they had to custom make the head of the halo to fit my stone, each ring can look slightly different. Didn't really make sense to me how changing the head would affect the shank, and the whole thing sounded like a load of BS to me. I strongly expressed my displeasure about not being informed to approve any design deviations, and will now need to wait another 4-6wks for the remake. Although the jeweler easily agreed to do the remake free of charge, they didn't even apologize for the inconvenience, which surprised me as they have a good reputation as far as customer service goes. Oh well. I'll keep you guys posted on how everything turns out....
 
I'm glad they agrees to remake it. The ring they gave you looks very different from the stock design and I would have been unhappy with that. Their excuse doesn't make sense and it's almost like the jeweler tried to copy the designer setting rather than just order it from the designer. Nit saying that's what they did, but that's what it reminds me of and some Jewelers do that.
 
At least they are remaking it .... that's what matters!
 
So, the reset is finally done... Sigh, I hate to say it, but although the shank now looks great, there is something "off" about the halo that I can't put my finger on. I'm not sure if the pave isn't as well set, or if there's extra metal around the center stone. Ugh, what should I do? I'm moving from the area in less than 2 months, and want to make sure my ring is perfect.

is it the prongs? the inner bezel? the size of the diamonds?
 
If you are comparing the new setting to the stock setting, I can see that the melee in the halo seems to be smaller on the stock setting. On your new setting, the melee seems to be larger, and as a result the halo looks slightly bigger than that on the stock setting. Is that what you are thinking is "off" about the new setting?
 
The shank definitely looks more like the original! :)) But you're right -- something about the proportions on the halo looks different. On the original piece, the size of the stones in the halo seems to be smaller, proportionally, to the centre stone than in your ring. Your halo stones seem much bigger, relative to the size of the centre stone. The setting of the diamonds also seems different, especially at the corners. In the original, the corners of the halo are formed by two stones meeting, whereas in your ring, the corners are made of single stones, which gives the corners a more rounded look (to me).

Don't get me wrong -- your ring is BEAUTIFUL as it is, but if you're wanting it to look exactly like the original setting, it's not quite there yet.
 
I think it looks great. Maybe you can just think of it like this: "I have a lovely custom setting" and maybe stop comparing it to the stock setting? But, if you are unhappy, then you should ask for it to be redone.
 
Do you know what the specs of the stock pic stone are compared to yours? That will affect proportions...
 
I think it looks great! But maybe the prongs are a little bulky so that's what is bothering you?
 
phew, the shank does look much more like the original, lovely!

i agree, something doesn't look the same with the halo. the prongs seem bulkier, and the halo looks larger, less squared-off and less sharp somehow. sometimes it is so hard to manage expectations - it sounds like you expected the halo to be scaled down proportionately for your stone and for the overall look and feel to be maintained; maybe they thought you expected the same size halo as the original. it would have been helpful if they had presented both options to you and discussed how it would affect the look and feel of the ring, then let you make the call.

so, are you thinking you'll say something or not?
 
I think the ring looks wonderful! :)) .....except for the prongs :(sad Maybe you could just ask your jeweler to file down the prongs so that they aren't so rounded? Your ring is beautiful though! :love:
 
I think it looks really pretty, And to my eye I think the major difference is the prongs are a little bigger in the second ring.
