Am I being sold duds?

An E color will never look Grey! It will look snow white!!
E and Strong Blue is a big "NO"Slight or Faint is ok.
An Excellent cut of GIA is good enough for the average person, If it doesnot cost more check the light performance.

I was unclear with my word choice when I used the term 'grey'. I didn't mean the stone's body colour, I meant the stone's performance in light. E is amazingly white. Luckily a lot of people think Gs are beautifully white too.

Gav, I used All Diamonds in Melbourne. Ring is being made now. I got a stone from them which was also listed on James Allen but they were able to get it to me cheaper than I would have gotten from JA (after taxes etc).

I havent yet seen the ring or diamond in person but to date my dealings have been pretty good. They recommended me about 4 different batches of diamonds and we finally settled on one.

I gave All Diamonds the parameters for angles etc and then posted options on here for confirmation. Most of the time I would then search the diamonds myself on JA or other and reserve them so I could wait for feedback.

Thanks all
How do I get in contact with Garry?

As for deposit I think I can get it refunded but with difficulty. I am after something local as I need a decent place for after market service of the ring etc..

My partner has expressed something around 1.3 ( though I think what she actually means is something with 7x7 dimensions). I am aiming for G colour and VS2 with of course the best cut, no colour inclusions, hazy or milkiness. Been trying to budget around 13-14k Australian dollars all up including the setting (so around 13k Australian for the stone which is maybe 10k usd?

I’m open to either suggestions I can bring to my dealer or yes if Garry can help, happy to try that avenue

Cheers!

The typical after purchase "service" is to clean the ring, check the stones/prongs, and maybe buff off some scratches. Maybe a single re-sizing during the first post-buying year. Assuming you go every year (...bwahahaha), that is about $100-150 usd per visit. Any competent jeweler can perform those services. I would not limit yourself to a local vendor for such a small service value. Any good local jeweler will be happy to service a ring they did not make. I don't see enough value added to make it worth limiting yourself.

Buy yourself a 10x loupe (and 20x would be helpful) to examine the setting and prongs. Use a mild dish soap (like blue Dawn) for weekly cleaning. You can get a ultrasonic or steam cleaner if you like.

Ditto. Seems silly to spend $13k with someone to save $100/year, and most likely you won't visit them yearly. Not to mention, if you move or the business goes under or gets bought out by someone you don't like.

Your money so do as you please. But I'd buy the best diamond for best price regardless rather it was local or not. Granted you would be an international customer, but I used separate vendors for the diamond and setting and the closest was 8 hours away from me. With technology, phones and international shipping services, location is not much of a limiting factor anymore.

Either way, Halloway Diamonds is a good recommendation.

Was it this thread or another we recommended Garry but he was 8 hours away? Rather close or not has in the country so worth a call at least.

OP is in Sydney, Garry is in Melbourne, about an 8-9 hour drive away. Easily accessible over the net, phone or email. If they are using the same virtual inventory as JA that’s a plus for us helping to find out.

Only issue is whether or not OPs current dealer will bother to obtain scope images if he requests them (most local Aussie jewellers I know have not even heard about Idealscope or ASET and assume that GIA XXX represents the best in the business).

Gav, where abouts in Aus are you mate? I just bought from a jeweler in Aus who was able to get a full ring made up cheaper than I could find online once taxes etc were taken into account.
Not trying to be rude or doubt your experience but what quality was the diamond and the setting?
That experience does not match most people’s experience of local Aus jewellers vs US options online.

18k yellow gold setting ring, tiffany style, with white gold 6 prong.

Diamond is a H, VS1, ex ex ex. The diamond was available on James Allen and was given the thumbs up on here. The diamond was about 6200 on JA (USD) which came to approx $8,800 AUD. With taxes this would come to about $9,600 from JA.

The local jeweler came in about 1500 cheaper than if I was to get the same diamond and setting through JA, and I didn't have to worry about the GST payment on arrival etc.

Obviously everyone's experiences are going to be different.

That’s in line with the budget I’m looking st. Would be much appreciate if you could share details of the jeweller! Thanks!!!

Search "All Diamonds" on Facebook

Thanks all

I’ve dropped a message to the Holloway website

I’ll also have a look on whiteflash and James Allen in the mean time..

Someone has posted these measurements, but if you stick to them, you'll likely get one of the better GIA Ex cut stones. Tell your jeweler you are not interested in stones outside this range.

Table 54-58%
Depth 60-62.3%
Crown angles 34-35 (up to 35.5 can sometimes work with a 40.6 pavillion angle)
Pavillion angle 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41 if the crown angle is close to 34)
