First post here but have really liked all of the information so far.

I am looking at purchasing a ring from my home town jeweler that is a good family friend. However, the diamond I think might be well overpriced. Any opinions?

Pear Shape
1.02
E
SI1
Med Fluor
Table: 58%
$5957.80

Total ring cost is $8390 for 14k white gold. Band is pove with diamonds halfway around and are SI1 quality.

Thanks on any opinions.

hey brandon

welcome to ps!
unfortunately there is not nearly enough information here to tell whether or not you are getting a good price. if you love the diamond and are getting great service, the price is right.

Hey belle,

Thanks for the welcome!!

The diamond is very beautiful and the service is second to none. I have just looked around at prices here and they seem to almost be $1000 less. However, the cut is exactly what we want and the symmetry is graded as excellent.

What is your opinion on fluorescence being medium? Just not sure with the price. Guess I will just have think about it.

By the way, has anyone ever seen a 3/8 (diamond weight) white gold/platinum criss cross beaded pave engagement band?

Found one at Jareds but can''t seem to find a pic online.

The truth is if you trust your local guy I wouldn''t worry about paying a premium, PLUS if you''ve seen it in person you''ve got the best information of all! Don''t sweat more details if you love the diamond and have had a chance to shop around and compare it with other diamonds. You don''t necessarily need the IS image, sarin, etc if you''ve seen it in person and you love the cut, as you said.

No MRSSALVO, something more like the attached file but much smaller band width, either in white gold or platinum, beaded pave halfway down each strand. Will be including a pear shape for the center stone.

i don''t recall seeing anything quite like that band. i was assuming you were looking for a round center stone!

that''s what i get for assuming!
i wouldn''t worry about the med. fluor. as long as it''s blue

you will know it when you see it and you won''t hesitate. what does your heart say?

I am not an expert, just a housewife/schoolteacher.
i have a fluorescent pear. i used my eyes and a loupe to decide. blue fluorescence is pretty, by the way.

mine was covered in filth, used, from a pawn shop. spready 1.25 carats estimated g-h SI1 - SI2 for $2000 cash. L:W ratio 1.5:1. when i saw it I bought it without hesitating. i never have had a lab report done.

your price is right for retail. have you considered secondhand (1/2 price) with a fresh setting?

E-Si1... is there a lab report?

There is a premium allright, in the end what matters is what matters to you. It is not impossible to see the diamonds online - it just takes a bit of time and effort to obtain pictures and so forth. For some, that is enough to make the local premium worthwile. why not, in fact.

Otherwise, with a platinum setting this could turn to be a 6k ring rather than 8k with 14kt gold setting.

It is what it is...

I have to agree with the opinions that you have been given already.

Being an independent jeweler my first response is buy from your friend because you willl know that he will be around for a long time, unlike some chains that close stores to either save money off the bottom line or because of bankruptcy problems...anyway....my father-in-law gave me the best advise on purchasing anything....

Thanks guys for all the helpful info/advice.

Got some more information on the diamond. What do you think?

Pear Shape

SI1
Med Blue Fluor
Table Size: 57.5%
Total Depth: 58.1%
Table is off 0%
Excellent Symmetry
Very Good Polish
$5957.80

Also, what quality of diamonds usually are put in a band (engagement or wedding)?? Jared Jewelry has told me there bands contain SI or better quality and close to near colorless? Is this the norm? Just wondering if it is worth having the family jeweler make the ring with defined quality diamonds and pay more? The band is micro pave so might not make a difference?

Sorry I missed this the first time around, Bew.

The $5958 is a little pricey for the stone. You can check comparables using the search at the top of this page. Maybe there is some room for negotiation. If you have seen this stone and really love it, that is what is most important. Talk to your jeweler and see what happens.

Does this stone have a GIA report? If so, it may be worth it to pay more for a local jeweler. From searching here on pricescope the price is approximately $1000 than what you would pay with an online vendor. Also, since this is an E colored stone, it''s important that you use at least F-G colored stones in the band, otherwise they will look yellow compared to your center stone. SI clarity is fine as long as their idea of SI clarity is eyeclean.

Just for an example, I have an F colored stone and the stones in my wedding band are F-G, VS2-SI1, and I can see no color difference between them. I am very color sensitive, and I would have noticed if the stones in my wedding band were more yellow than my large diamond even though they are only 5 pointers.
