All about wigs!!!

Hallo!!!! Finally I have time to post! Did you get anything????? How are you going on your wig journey?????

The reddish colour is probably not the best colour on me but when have I ever let that stop me

I feel bold and a bit naughty in it so I wear it when I’m in that kind of mood. Plus there are only so many variations of brown I can go through before I think “Dammit the red is interesting”

AliExpress loves this brown and my friends and family love this brown

This feels a bit spicier

Love both of these on you mellow. You really rock alternative hair! So much fun sharing with you. Thanks for starting this thread. In real life more women than we realize wear alternative hair. I had no clue til I started wearing it myself. It can be an expensive hobby when we do human hair but that's the way everything seems to be now too. And IMO it's worth it.

life is unfair, i want your naturally straight hair
you and @missy manage to look so natural (well not the green but ...)

Hahaha you don't like the green? You don't think it looks natural?

I love this photo we took this past March..it isn't easy being green though as you wisely point out Nicky :)

I am not lying when I tell you people asked me on St Patty's Day if I dyed my hair LOL I was like cmon it is so obviously a wig...this was before they all got drunk too

i would be afraid if i had to trim it to get a fringe (bangs) i would just keep on going like with all my barbie dolls who all ended up with Annie Lennox hair doos

The key is, IMO, get a professional to cut the bangs. I personally am not taking a chance on hair that cost a fortune. I found a local stylist who has exeperience with alternative hair and she does a great job. Though I am feeling funny about going back because she never charges me and while I tip her generously it isn't her salon and I dont want her to get into trouble...I have brought at least 8 (or was it 9) wigs to her to put bangs in and she refused to charge me at any of the three visits I made to her. So I have been hesitant to go back. I am worried she could get into trouble...I asked her to please charge me but she would not. Three separate with two and three wigs brought to her each time

@mellowyellowgirl, I bought a wig and I love it!!!! It’s human hair so unfortunately it was pricey. I’ll probably end up with a collection of 2 wigs LOL. They had a couple experts helping people pick out wigs. They would bring out wigs that women were asking for and the women were not falling in love. Once they put on a wig the experts thought would look good, it was almost always love at first sight. No one I noticed ended up getting the hair color they thought they originally wanted. You heard women saying “why haven’t I been coloring my hair this color?” a lot. Then they cut and style the wig on your head. It took a few hours.

There were many women who attended and the whole process was fun. Everyone was extremely supportive of one another and everyone was very happy with their new wig. Who doesn’t want to have gorgeous hair!!!!

I’m not wearing the wig yet because I want it to remain perfect for a wedding we are attending. After that I’ll wear it often.

It’s been so much fun to see the great time you are having with wigs mellowyellowgirl. You look beautiful in all of them! Bold and naughty is a good thing every once in a while. I love reading your posts about your latest wig find.

@ Daisys and Diamonds, LOL. I loved your Barbie comment. One of my nieces did the same thing when she was little. She cuts hair as her job now.

Please please please post a photo for us once you’ve won it to the wedding @Calliecake

Soooo excited that you’ve enjoyed your wig journey so far! Your story make me wonder why hairdressers haven’t been giving more colour suggestions?

What kind of styles was everyone buying? Long, short, curly?

Ooooh you might buy more if you love them Callie! Just ask Missy!

Mine feel almost like jewellery now! Which wig to wear with the outfit of the day!

This was me today copying all the 18yos. They wear baggy jeans, t shirt, jacket and most have flowing hair. So I too have the same outfit and flowing hair. Plus giant rings because I’m me :lol-2:IMG_0177.jpeg

You look beautiful @mellowyellowgirl. What length and style do you think looks best on you? It would be hard to choose, you look great in all of them. I’ll post a pic after the wedding. There were a few woman who got longer wigs and had them styled with big bouncy curls, with a few layers, a few longer bobs, both straight and wavy styles. One long straight style. It was fun seeing all the different styles. The stylists were great at helping you figure out what would look best on you.

The woman who color’s my hair told me to bring the wig to the salon and she will match my hair color to that of the wig. The wig color looks so much better to me.

Oh let me think this out loud on the page.

I’m notoriously bad about what looks good on me because I tend to like certain styles and if I like it, I deem it good looking regardless of whether it objectively is or not.

I think the wig that is the safest, that the general public will not react to (they never do to any of the wigs but this one is especially safe) and just seems to think that I just have lovely hair is this one:

So this is the one I’d default to in a situation where I wanted to feel as familiar and comfortable as possible.

My best friends and family think I look best in this one:

New one that just arrived today:

It’s just a brown version of a something I own in black.

LOVE these on you. You look beautiful in every thing girl!

Did I share my pony wig?
I wear it all different ways
I have fun with it :)

Regular mid high pony

In a top knot

And divided into two
Key is keep it messy and it looks more natural IMO
Next try pigtails lol
(probably not  )

Is it constructed so you can wear it in a ponytail Missy or it’s a normal wig and you put it in a ponytail?

It is specifically constructed to go into a ponytail or an updo. The wefts are sewn in a circular unlike other alternative hair. It would be challenging to wear a regular piece in a high pony or updo. You can only do a low pony but not a mid to high with a non pony wig.

There are different pony wigs. Lace and non lace

Just a quick comment to help others who might be interested
It is much less expensive to find good online vendors and purchase from them than to go to a "wig" salon
My very first wig was at Shuly in Brooklyn and it was super expensive. But I was new to wigs and wanted to hear about them from an in person professional and try them on. But I didn't have to buy from them yet I did because i was a novice. Now I know better and save a lot by purchasing from trusted online vendors. Who deal in quality human hair. Just wanted to mention that so you don't have to spend a small fortune for beautiful and realistic alternative hair.

I’m too much of a cheapskate for it but I love this tip from you Missy! One of my acquaintances has been watching my wig look unfold and she went searching for alternative hair only to discover that they are selling human hair wigs for $6000 aud in my part of the world. I have no idea where she was looking because I don’t know anything about it but she totally balked at the price.

If you’re not a plastic fantastic person like I am, I can imagine how daunting it must be to start the wiggy journey! Imagine having to put up that money and not knowing whether it will look decent!

I am disappointed when my $20 wig looks weird, imagine that being $2000.

On a different note, I just received a wig that I like but the scalp looks weird. Applied for a return only to have AliExpress refund me and tell me to keep the wig. I feel obligated to wear it now ( hate wasting resources and all) so I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to make it work.

Essentially the scalp is too pointy…….

If you want post a photo of the scalp. Maybe I can help you make it look more realistic

Absolutely
My Shuly was over 3k
Never making that mistake again and trying to help others avoid that expensive mistake too

Online same quality much less though as you wisely point out still expensive. I’ve basically stopped buying jewelry but I am satiated with bling anyway:)

Please excuse the terrible shot as I’m in my PJs. There’s no saving this I think but in the interest of sharing a “wigs gone wrong” moment I figure I will post it anyway.

It’s even more conehead in real life. Hubby reckons that a. It’s a bad cone head scalp and b. I’m not made for these super short straight bobs in a black colour. They look extra fake on me even though my bio hair is black.

Wet the hair and put it on a mannequin head with a similar circumference to you and wrap a scarf around it tightly to flatten it and make it less coneheady

For the scalp part line I can’t see it here but there’s hair chalk I use on some of my pieces to make it look more natural

IMG_5838.jpeg

This was tinted way too much for my skin tone so I used peach and white chalk to lighten it

Another wig

Who'da thunk there's so much to wigs? Love this thread!

I have thick-ish curly hair, and a punkin'-shaped head, so I suspect fitting a wig might be quite an episode. LOL! I've always dreamed of having a shorter bob with straight hair. Not that it would necessarily suit my face shape, I just love the look. :D

I will try it and report back Missy!!! You sure know your stuff!!!!!

Your hair sounds lovely!

I guess the upside to thin hair is that it sits well under a wig!

But yes I am a total fan of the fact that I can go from a lion’s mane to a sleek bob in 3 minutes.

***

Speaking of………….Missy…..You’ll be proud of me……. I went shopping, tried on 3 overhead t shirts and my wig did not even budge! I’ve come a long way since the days where my wig used to shift as I was speaking to people!

IMG_0211.jpeg

PS I love the red hair with the green. Makes me feel like Anne of Green Gables! I wear that red wig with green clothing

@mellowyellowgirl, They all look great on you. What do you do to make them look so natural? The red looks beautiful on you. It looks so pretty with your green shirt and RING! Your lucky so many colors and styles look great on you! A lot of colors looked washed out or just plan blah on me.

One of my biggest fears with the wig process was I didn’t want to purchase a wig only to decide a day later that I didn’t love it. I was glad I was able to try on different wigs before purchasing. This whole process was fun and easy. I wear my real hair up all the time now because it’s so thin. I can’t wait to throw the wig on and be able to wear a pretty hairstyle again. My wig is styled very similar to the picture of you in the yellow dress.

Aww thanks. Only because I started learning about alternative hair years ago. My own bio hair started thinning and I did not want to do anything invasive so I started looking into this. And it is a rabbit hole lol. But I am stubborn and never give up so kept at it. While I am far from an expert (because I still don't wear most of my pieces yet) and I am still learning I can say I enjoy this hobby if you can call it that. And girl, I am more than happy to share anything and everything I know about alternative hair with you. XO

Not the best photo (in my nightgown haha...I often post in pjs or my nightgown because early AM is when I have more time) but here is a piece I got months ago and have never worn. It is a budget wig. I had to try it. It is human hair (probably Brazilian) but only cost $500 which is believe it or not a great price. But I prefer my more expensive pieces. I need to trim the bangs

Haha @Calliecake I read your “I wear my real hair” as “I wear my red hair” and I was all: OMG YOU HAVE NATURAL RED HAIR!!!!!! That is so cool!!! When is this wedding? I’m really looking forward to seeing your hair!

I’m bet you can pull off more looks than you think! My solution is to whack on some sort of lipstick that vaguely compliments the wig (according to me) and off I go!

@missy that looks fantastic!!!! What is it about it that doesn’t measure up to your other pieces?

Hehe I’m notorious for debuting things in public as soon as I receive them! So usually if a wig arrives and has no issues, I’m off with it that same day :lol-2:

Ok a bit of excitement! So I’m mid 40s and I’m fine about aging but I will admit I’m pretty thrilled when someone thinks I’m younger. So anyways I’ve been going to the Vietnamese markets here and people will address you according to your age in terms such as little sister, big sister, little girl (when they feel that they are much older than you).

The various store holders are all usually older than me and I’ve been calling them “Big sister” and they call me “little sister” in return.

Hehe lately in some of the wigs I’ve been addressed as “little girl” which gave me a big thrill :D

I hear you. I used to be the youngest person in the room now I am the oldest. It takes getting used to. But I am OK with looking my age..just grateful I got here if you kwim...I am reaching a milestone birthday in a few months and I think I will be OK with it but I guess I will find out for sure soon enough

The hair quality doesn't feel as nice. The vendor put product in it to make it smooth and silky but I know when I wash it styling it will be more challenging than with my more expensive pieces which can air dry with no frizz. I don't even own a hairdryer. I always let my hair air dry and I have zero hair skills so I don't want to work at making my hair look decent if you kwim

And good for you going for it. It takes me time to get my courage up to wear them in public lol
The first time I wore any of my alternative hair in public was at Greg's family reunion and I was nervous.
I have come a long way since then but it was passable. I think. LOL

It was the first time I wore any alternative hair in public (June 2024) and I wore a bandfall. Now I would wear a full wig but I was a novice at that time

Screen Shot 2025-05-29 at 6.51.49 AM.png

I am wincing at this photo...My smile can be too big and I have to remind myself to smile a little less big lol...showing too many teeth!!!

I think you look beautiful in that photo Missy!!! Your smile reaches your eyes which is the way to go I’ve been told!

Speaking of smiles, ok confession, so I’m a little vain and occasionally like to try the odd instagram pose that ends up on my feed.

I randomly received this about smiling for a photo. I’ve tried it several times now and it works beautifully!!! You can hold the smile and it still looks natural you just have to launch into it with enthusiasm!

Omg!!!! Zendaya wears wigs!!!! And Nicole Kidman!!!!! I’ve only just realise that now!

I actually never gave it a second thought why Zendaya has long curls sometimes and a short sleek hairstyle at other events.

Girl, you have no idea how many people in the public eye wear alternative hair. I mean you would be astounded. It is rampant. Which is good because it destigmatizes wig wearing and that makes it better for all of us. I mean really how is it that different from fake lashes, makeup etc? It's non invasive and it can change your look in an instant :)

ETA:
I love the variety of options available to us...here's one of my cheapie (shorter) Amazon wig...it was like $19!!! LOL

We've watched Andor, season 2, and the character Mon Mothma's hair has fascinated me since I saw in a brief interview/clip that she has blonde hair. Suddenly it tweaked that she's wearing wigs. It's sooo amazing that they can look SOOO natural, with the hairlines, in particular!

Here's a short IG reel showing the background hair/makeup: Mon Mothma / Genevieve O'Reilly hair

They have come a long way with wig hairlines.

oh wow look !
in the 21st cent there is no need for one's barbies to look like Anni Lennox for all eternity
